January Beers: Goin' Back ta Cali!
We're in a Left Coast state of mind this month, bringing the best in California brews:
Lagunitas IPA, California - Prepare for a taste that's downright scrappy with this special homicidally hoppy ale. Savor the fiest as the raging hop character engages the imperial qualities of the Malt foundation in mortal combat on the battlefield of your palate! 6.2%ABV.
Lagunitas Pils (Czech Style Pilsner), California - Like Adam and Eve, Issac and Ishmael, Mao and Confuscious, Good and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena, or Groucho and Moe ... Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still, we must love them for who they are: separate but equal, with liberty, and justice, for all. Cheers! 6.2%ABV.
Mendocino Brewing, Red Tail Ale, California - This flagship beer is brewed in the traditional "old world" manner, using premium two-row malted barley, hops and a custom proprietary yeast strain. This is an amber ale with a rich complex refreshing flavor and a crisp dry finish. Like good wine, Red Tail Ale is a perfect complement to fine dining.
Anderson Valley Brewing, Hop Ottin IPA, California - Hop Ottin' IPA is, just like Anderson Valley itself, easy for anyone to appreciate while offering depth and complexity for those who take the time to savor. Brilliant copper color with a lingering, lacy white head. The nose sings of grapefruit, pine needles, citron, roses, and bergamot. The flavor is rich in the citrusy, resiny flavors typical of the Pacific-Northwest hops packed into this beer, balanced artfully with a solid malt character and crisp bitterness leading to a beautifully dry, light herbal finish. More than just a hop lover's dream, Hop Ottin' IPA is a balanced beer for the ages. 7% ABV. |

Wines: Livin' in Land Down Under
Awww, crikey! B3's doing an Australian wine theme?! Bet that means this write up is gonna get all campy with "G'Day mate" and "shrimp on the barbie" references ... <awkward face> ...uhhh ... NO!!! This ain't Outback Steakhouse, people. No gimmicks necessary to sell the amazing line up of Aussie wines we're pouring in honor of the 2012 world cycling season's kick off this month in beautiful South Australia with The Tour Down Under. So sit back and savor these great wines from the southern hemisphere.

Cape Mentelle Cabernet-Merlot Blend, Australia - Dark fruit plays off of winter spice undertones on the nose, leading to a rich and varied palate impression; most salient are chocolate, cassis, and spice box flavors. The result is a balanced and mellow red wine, characterized by fine-grained, ripe fruit tannins. This wine is a bit plumy and chocolaty, but it also has herbal and floral notes to add complexity.
New Harbor Pinot Noir, Australia - From the cool temps of the South Island's northern slopes, New Harbor's pinot is bright and fresh. It's not a concentrated, big-fruit pinot that's been the trend from California producers. Think of this as a medium-bodied strawberry and raspberry surprise. Easygoing but not thin, friendly and winning in a Beaujolais kind of way.
Green Point Pinot Noir Rose, Australia - Delicate and fresh aromas of red berry, cherry and strawberry leap from the glass and entice the taste buds. Soft and round, the mid-palate offers floral, strawberry and redcurrant Pinot Noir characters that extend through to a dry, savory back palate. The supple and fresh mouth feel is complemented by a balanced and persistent finish.
Green Point Chardonnay, Australia - Green Point Chardonnay has a pale straw yellow hue with green tints. Complex aromas of fresh peaches, grapefruit rind and cinnamon combine with spicy vanillin oak. Stone fruit and citrus flavors develop on the palate and are enhanced by a creamy texture. Subtle flint and savory flavors extend the palate and provide a lingering, crisp finish. |
