December Beers: Like Holiday Brews?

Thank a Monk!

Need a reason to drink great beer during the holidays? Turns out brewing special seasonal beers predates modern history and has its Monk and beerorigin as part of the pagan celebrations of Winter Solstice. Later, as monasteries often functioned as the local brewery, monks made the first holiday commemorative beers to celebrate the birth of Christ. It seems winter beers are as much a state of mind (and spirit!) as they are a frothy libation. And the best beers for fending off a long winter's night are old ales, strong ales, barleywines and strong lagers. So, in efforts of keeping you seasonally celebratory as well as warm and toasty, we offer the following:

Harpoon Winter Warmer, Massachusetts - Winter Warmer was Harpoon's first beer designed especially to be enjoyed during the holiday season. The overall character is a smooth, medium bodied ale spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.  5.9%ABV.

Victory V TwelveBrooklyn Winter Ale, Massachusetts - Brooklyn Winter Ale is brewed from heirloom Maris Otter malts to create a beer with roots in blustery Scotland. Brooklyn Winter Ale is richly malty, aromatic, full-bodied and perfect for the holidays. 6.1%ABV.

Victory Brewing V-12 (Belgian Strong Ale), Pennsylvania, 750ML bottle - Vintage-dated, Belgian-style specialty ale, offered in corked 25.4 oz. bottles, is a sensation in subtlety. Heady with a aromatic fruity start and taste, this amber ale features hints of pear and apricot in its well-nuanced flavor. The initial impression of fruitiness concludes in a refreshing dryness that begs you to sip again. Be forewarned, this ale is immense, as it registers 12% ABV.

Wines: Holiday Reds

Red. It symbolizes love, passion ... and, at this time of year: the holidays. So, red wines are on the menu all month long. Did you know: It is the grape skins that are responsible for the red wine's distinct color spectrum. The skins are in contact with the grape's juice during the fermentation process, allowing the dispersion of both color and tannins. The individual wine's particular red hue depends on the grape type used in the process and the length of time the skin's pigmentation is in contact with juice. There are right around 50 key red wine varietals that consistently manifest themselves in today's worldwide wine market. So in honor of the happiest holiday color, we're pouring the following lovely reds for you all month:

 red wine print

Spanish Quarter Cabernet Sauvignon Tempranillo, Spain: Silky flavors thanks to an excellent blending of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Tempranillo.  Deep purple-red coloring with dark cherry, blackberry, and hints of spice and chocolate on the nose.  A light sweet oak finish goes well with the berry and dark chocolate flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) / Tempranillo (45%)

Terrazas de Los Andes Malbec, ArgentinaTerrazas de los Andes was named by Wine Spectator as "One of the 20 worldwide wineries which year after year delivers consistent high quality wines." The vineyards are in the foothills of the Andes, where each varietal is grown at the ideal altitude for optimal development. The pre-phylloxera vines are irrigated with snowmelt from the Andes. The Terrazas de Los Andes Malbec is a terrific red with sturdy, black fruit flavors; firm on the palate; soft tannins in the finish.

Chateau Greysac '06, Medoc, France: A beautiful medium bodied left-bank Bordeaux loaded with red fruits with mild tannins upon release. 50% Cabernet, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
