August Beers: CAN I Get a Witness?
Don't believe great canned beers exist? Well, get ready to say "Amen!", people. Because Oskar Blues Brewery (in tiny Lyons, Colorado, pop.1400) changed all that with the 2002 launch of their "Canned Beer Apocalypse." The brewery began hand-canning its hoppy, assertive-but-elegant Dale's Pale Ale on a table-top machine that sealed just one can at a time. The move made Oskar Blues the first U.S. craft brewer to brew and can its own beer. And unlike cans of old, the modern aluminum can is lined with a coating so beer and metal never touch. Cans are also easier to recycle, free of glass breakage issues, and less fuel-consuming to ship. (35% of the weight of a bottle of beer is the bottle itself.) So get ready to say Hallelujah!!!
Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale, Colorado - America's first hand-canned craft beer is a voluminously hopped mutha that delivers a hoppy nose, assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and hops from start to finish. First canned in 2002, Dale's Pale Ale is a hearty (6.5% and 65 IBUs), critically acclaimed trailblazer that has changed the way craft beer fiends perceive canned beer.
Oskar Blues Mamas Lil Yella Pils (Traditional Pilsner), Colorado - Oskar Blues' newest beer is an uncompromising, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czech Republic famous. Unlike mass market "pilsners" diluted with corn & rice, Mama's is built with 100% pale malt, German specialty malts, and Bavarian hops. While it's rich with Czeched-out flavor, its gentle hopping (35 IBUs) and low ABV (just 5.3%) make it a luxurious but low-dose (by Oskar Blues standards) refresher.
New England Brewing Sea Hag IPA, New England - This one's another beauty in a can; a rich and full bodied India Pale Ale with complex malt character blended with cascade and noble hops. The end result is a beer that satisfies the "hop head" out there and won't chase away the newcomer. 6.2% ABV
We will also be serving up four great beers from Highland Brewing out of Asheville, North Carolina: Gaelic Ale, Kashmir IPA, Mocha Stout and Oatmeal Porter. |

Wines: Wish You Were Here Wines
Every once in awhile, a couple just has to get away. But we still love our customers and wish we could take you all along with us when we travel. Since that isn't possible, this month we've changed "wish you were here" to "come sample it here" by bringing back some souvenir wines from a beautiful winery we discovered while vacationing in Oregon. Come check out what we brought back for you (it's way better than a lame t-shirt):
Erath Winery Story Erath wines are an expression of the land that the winery has cultivated for more than 40 years, longer than any other winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The red, iron-rich Jory soils, combined with gentle breezes and warming sunshine of a marine climate, have bestowed upon Dundee a terroir of note. It has given rise to the handcrafting phenomenon, and the art of Pinot.
Belying the simple, rustic elegance of Erath Pinot are three quite complex components that, together, create a canvas for Pinot discovery. The Climate: Pinot grape varieties thrive in Oregon's northern latitude. Occasional marine breezes and long hours of sunshine create warm summer days and a cooler autumn that allow grapes to ripen gradually, key to producing memorable wines. The Viticultural Practices: In the Willamette Valley, vintners perfect techniques to thoroughly ripen fruit and produce quality, uniquely flavored grapes. The Winemaking Practices: When crafting Pinot, they combine time-honored practices and new technologies to capture the unique character, or terroir, of the vineyards.
Erath Oregon Pinot Gris 2009, Dundee Hills, Oregon - Fragranced with mandarin orange, ripe pear, subtle talc and lavender notes, the 2009 Pinot Gris promises plenty. The promise is fulfilled when the silky texture and uplifting acidity come together with flavors reminiscent of melon, citrus, apple and honey.
Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2009, Dundee Hills, Oregon 2009 -
This wine offers a commensurately impressive sensory payload. This lustrous beauty showcases aromas of raspberry pie with pleasing hints of mint, citrus and a provocative suggestion of smoke. Fresh and bright flavors on the palate are balanced with a blend of juicy cherry and racy pomegranate. |

The Tour de Force is a full, heavy espresso, with thick sweet crema and a smooth finish without bitterness. While it was originally conceived as an espresso blend it is also recommended for brewing as a coffee for a unique experience you won't soon forget. Available by the can at the Cafe. |
