spring flowersSpring Time!

Greetings!

They say "spring has sprung" but we think it might actually be summer trying to make its leap on the scene. Enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts, it will be scorching outside before you know it. To get you ready, this month we're offering lots of light and refreshing menu options paired with perfectly cool drinks and treats ...just the thing to get you all "warmed up" and ready for the full brunt of summer.

REMINDER: Easter Sunday we have regular Sunday hours: 8am-3pm, so be sure to hop on by!

April Beers: Belgian Beers!

The Ronde van Vlaanderen (English interpretation: Tour of Flanders) is the hardest single-day bike race in the world. Combining ancient cobblestone roads along with unrelenting short, steep climbs and some of the nastiest weather Europe has to offer, this race is clearly for the "strong men" of cycling.  If you are Belgian, winning this race is considered better than winning the world championships (especially if you are from the Northern region).  So with that in mind, let's leave the racing to the pros and toast to their success with some of Belgium's best beers.

ronde flanders

Leffe Blonde, Belgium - A dry, fruity, lightly spiced beer, full and creamy - a perfect balance of strength and subtlety. The brand has a delicate and light, malty aroma and a subtle, sweet finish. 6.6% ABV.

Stella Artois, Belgium - Stella Artois was first brewed as a Christmas beer in Leuven.  It was named Stella, from the star of Christmas, and Artois after Sebastian Artois, founder of the brewery.  It's brewed to perfection using the original Stella Artois yeast and the celebrated Saaz hops.  It's the optimum premium lager, with it's full flavor and clean crisp taste.  5.2% ABV.

Grimbergen Dubbel (Double), Belgium - A dark burgundy, top-fermented Abbey Beer with a full body. The mixture of different malts and the use of dark candy sugar combine to produce a delicious sweet toffee taste with a brandy-like finish. The name Double refers to the fact that it has been fermented twice: once in the barrel, then again in the maturation cellars. 6.5% ABV

westmalle

Westmalle Dubbel, Belgium - Westmalle Dubbel is a dark, reddish-brown Trappist beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. The creamy head has the fragrance of special malt and leaves an attractive lace pattern in the glass. The flavour is rich and complex, herby and fruity with a fresh-bitter finish. It is a balanced quality beer with a soft feel in the mouth and a long, dry aftertaste. 7% ABV.

Avery White Rascal (Belgian Wheat Ale), Colorado - A truly authentic Belgian style wheat or "white" ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yup, that's yeast on the bottom) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher. 5.6% ABV

We'll also have are house Belgian beers including, Chimay Red, Palm Ale and Victory Brewing's Golden Monkey Triple. If Belgian beers are not your favorites also try Peak Organic's refreshing Pomegranate Wheat this month.

Wines: A little Red and a little White

Château Bonnet lies to the North of the Entre-Deux-Mers, on the clay-chalk slopes of the commune of Grézillac, overlooking the Dordogne valley some 10km south of Saint Emilion. The estate dates back to the 17th century; when André Lurton took over in 1956, it comprised 30 hectares of vineyard, which he immediately undertook to renovate and develop.

chateau bonnet

Today, half Bonnet's production is devoted to a highly popular dry white (AOC Entre-Deux-Mers), a blend of Sauvignon, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes, carefully vinified to preserve the freshness and bouquet of these varietals.

The other half is composed of classic red varietals - Merlots, Cabernet Francs and Cabernet Sauvignons - producing noteworthy clarets widely held to be superior to the general run of the appellation.

This month we feature a wonderful Bordeaux from Chateau Bonnet, the 2007 Reserve. Andre has crafted this refreshing, juicy red from classic Bordeaux varitales 50% Cabernet and 50% Merlot.

As things begin to warm up, we long for refreshing white wines. This month we have the perfect choice, San Telmo, Torrontes from Argentina. This wine comes from the distinctive Torrentes  grape, which is unique to Argentina and is the country's most popular white varietal.  Intensely aromatic and refreshing, this wine entices you with delightful floral and orange peel notes.  In the glass, this white wine's pale yellow hue shows soft glimmers of green.  On the palate, the crisp of orange, grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors are accented with jasmine and beautifully balanced with acidity.
