Earth Day 2009, April 22nd

Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of the Green Generation Campaign! This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation's core principles:

  • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.
  • An individual's commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
  • Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one

Greetings!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our one year birthday celebration last month and congratulations to all of the winners of our weekly give aways!

The colors of this month's newsletter probably caught your eye, since they are pretty bright and bold.  Red, yellow and black are the colors of Belgian flag!  So what does that have to do with anything?...well Belgium is where several great one-day bike races are this month.  Not to mention where some of the best beers in the world originate (see below for more information).

On the food front, you won't want to miss our great new seasonal salad and sandwich.  They are bound to make your mouth water!  (Details are in the left column below.)  And don't forget the delicious gelato - we are starting the month off with two great fruit flavors:  strawberries and cream and blueberry.

Other big news for this month is Earth Day is quickly approaching and B3 wants you to know we are doing our part to honor the planet.  We are now sorting all of our food waste for compost pick-up!  We are proud to announce that we have partnered with a local group in Audubon Park that grows and sells their produce locally.

We have a lot of fun events this month including, Movie Night, live music, Happy Hour on Wednesdays and the B3 Book Buddies Story Time Club.

Tour of Flanders Brings Belgian Beers!

The Ronde van Vlaanderen (in English: Tour of Flanders) is the hardest single-day bike race in the world. Combining ancient cobblestone roads along with unrelenting short steep flanders flagclimbs and some of the nastiest weather Europe has to offer, this race is clearly for the "strong men" of cycling.  To win this race, if you are Belgian, is better than winning the world championships (especially if you are from the northern region).  So with that in mind let's leave the racing to the pros and toast to their success with some of Belgium's best beers; Leffe Blonde, Stella Artois, Grimbergen Dubbel, De Koninck Ale and Chimay!

Besides these beers we have 16 others to choose from.  We are sure you can find one, maybe two, possibly even three that will put a smile on your face.
April Wines and Races

While the one day "Classics" take place in Belgium, there are multiple stage races occurring in France and Spain.  These races are used by the potential Giro D'Italia contenders to hone their form for the first Grand Tour of the Year.  These multi-day events include the Vuelta al Pais Vasco Vuelta al Pais Vasco and the Vuelta Ciclista a Aragon in Spain as well as the Circuit de la Sarthe in France. This month we feature some wonderful wines from both Spain and France.

From France's Vin de Pays region  we will be serving a lovely Pinot Noir by Echelon. We'll also be serving two of our favorite wines, a bordeaux from the right bank, Chateau Duplessy and a bordeaux from the left bank, Chateau Greysac.

From Spain we'll have both a red and white wine.  Montecillo Rioja Blanco, this beautiful white wine is intensely fruity and aromatic with notes of pear, green apple, and banana with a light touch of citrus. Also on the menu from Spain is a rich, deep cherry red wine, Marques de Riscal Tempranillo.

Live Music "Tim Be Told"

Wednesday, April 15th at 7:00PM

Combining elements of soul, pop, rock, gospel and blues, Tim Be TBTTold has emerged in the Charlottesville music scene with their own unique sound. Tim Be Told (Tim Ouyang, Luan Nguyen, Andrew Chae, Jim Barredo, and Parker Stanley) continues to grow a loyal and passionate fan base both in Virginia and beyond. With each show, the band gains new listeners with their infectious guitar hooks, captivating melodies, and driving rhythm parts; but most importantly, they hope that their music will cause people to view life through a different lens, one of honesty, hope, redemption, and change.

Check their web site. Make sure you come by for this great show.
Movie Night at B3!
Featuring: "A Sunday in Hell"
Thursday, April 23rd at 7:30PM

After a month off, Movie Night is back and we have a great one for you. "A Sunday in Hell" is a 1977 Danish film directed by Jorgen Leth (don't worry there are no sub-titles as the narration is in English).  The film is a chronology of the the 1976 Paris Roubaix bicycle race.  "A sunday in hellSunday in Hell" is one of the few cycling films that offers a perceptive and interesting introduction to cycling for viewers who are new to the sport, while at the same time providing a great viewing experience for those who are already fans.

Paris-Roubaix is the most famous and usually the most dramatic of the spring classics. Much of the latter portion of the race is over narrow, cobbled roads that choke with dust on dry days and become slick and muddy in rain. For the riders it's a challenge to keep going without puncturing or crashing. Come in an early and get a great seat for this epic film.

As usual, the movie is free and so is the popcorn!
