Closing The Gap: Matching Talent To Job Needs |
While the unemployment rate is still hovering around 9 percent, many employers are finding a hidden challenge: a mismatch between available talent and the needs of companies looking to hire. Many factors can contribute to the inability of employers to find the talent to fill vacancies, from job seekers who lack the right skill set, or may not be a good fit within the culture of the company, or who believe that specialized skills should automatically result in getting paid more for those skills. To bridge the gap, several trends are emerging to fill the needs of a rebounding economy: - Companies are hiring temporary workers to fill gaps or bringing on temp-to-hire staff to make sure they fit well within the organization
- Firms are looking outside the local area to find ideal candidates
- Firms are expanding training and professional development offerings to court and keep top talent.
Once a company finds the perfect match, it must focus on retention to avoid repeating the same costly and time-consuming process. By offering employees development opportunities, they have a chance to expand and grow within the organization. Given today's talent shortage, top employers are dispensing with "just-in-time" hiring practices and adopting new strategies. Those that cling to old methods are likely to find their business suffering and their team decreasing in productivity. Can we help you with your talent needs? Call or email us today. |
Hiring Veterans Gains
New Incentives
On Nov. 21, the President signed the VOW to Hire Heroes Act to expand tax credits for companies that hire unemployed or disabled veterans.
The Work Opportunity credit provides employers with a tax credit equal to 40 percent of a portion of qualified first-year wages paid to unemployed or disadvantaged veterans through the end of 2012.
The basic credit provides a credit of up to $2,400 per hire for hiring veterans whose families receive food stamps, or who've been unemployed for 4 weeks - 6 months the preceding year. In addition, the Heroes act:
- Provides a credit, up to $9,600, for hiring disabled veterans who've been unemployed for 6 months or more in the preceding year
- Adds a credit of up to $5,600 for hiring nondisabled veterans who've been unemployed for 6 months or more in the preceding year, and
- Creates or expands programs that provide training and other vocational benefits for veterans.
To take advantage of the Work Opportunity credit, be sure to apply with the state workforce agency for certification of the employee's eligibility for the credit within 28 days after an employee's start date. |
5 Things To Do Daily For Success
A recent Fast Company article entitled "5 Things To Do Every Day For Success" drew lots of attention nationally. In the spirit of helping you achieve even higher levels of success in 2012, here is a brief recap of their recommendations:
- Wake up early - the early bird gets the worm -- or gets more things done. Plus, you'll feel more energized and productive when you get going. Exercise, clear out your inbox, check email
- Read the headlines and watch news - read more local, national and industry news. You'll feel better informed
- Contact at least one person who can hire you or buy from you - contact a current client, referral source, prospect or just someone who popped up on LinkedIn. You'll be surprised at the conversations and meetings that result
- Touch base with an old friend or associate -- reconnect with someone from school, business or just for fun
- Write a handwritten note to someone -- there is an art in sending handwritten notes... and it's worth rediscovering. Handwritten notes are always well received.
In sum: connect, engage and interact. You'll feel more informed and -- hopefully -- be more successful! |
