As the economy slowly heats up, there is no better time to consider reentering the workforce. Employers are looking for top talent, and if you have skills they want, you could be in luck. Follow these tips to make reentering the work world easier.
- Update skills before you look for a job -- volunteer, take online courses, explore internships -- all help fill gaps and enhance your resume
- Rework your resume -- emphasize skills and successes rather than dates of employment. Showcase experiences and achievements
- Be bold -- call company HR departments about posted positions that interest you and ask for an interview
- Be humble -- have friends review your resume, give you tips on networking and help you practice interview skills
- Be visible -- upload your resume to job-matching engine like Monster.com and staffing firms like Marketplace; they know of positions long before you will
- Be a star -- when you land an interview, stress your skills and work ethic rather than your time away. Draw parallels between the position and your real-life experiences
- Be open-minded -- consider part-time, project or contract work to "get in the door" to help you land a job that is a perfect fit for you.

Employer Roles In Documenting Workers
For employers, documenting alien employees is a balancing act. You must verify that employees are authorized to work in the United States, while avoiding unfair employment practices.
By law, you must complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form for each new hire and keep forms on file for 3 years from hiring date or 1 year after termination, whichever is later. The I-9 must be completed within 3 business days of an employee's first day on the job, unless the new hire shows a receipt proving they have applied for a replacement document. All documents must be presented and the I-9 form completed within 90 days of the first day of work.
Three categories of acceptable documents are needed -- one document from List A or one document each from Lists B and C. Photocopies are not acceptable.
List A - Establish both identity and employment eligibility, such as a U.S. passport or unexpired temporary resident card
List B - Establish identity, such as a driver's license or voter registration card
List C - Establish employment eligibility, such as a U.S. Social Security card or birth certificate
You must have an I-9 on file for all employees hired after November 6, 1986, regardless of citizenship, including every employee who receives a W-2 tax statement. You are not required to verify independent contractors or their workers. |

Salute To Manufacturing A Success
Over 350 business leaders attended the 2011 Salute to Manufacturing Luncheon in Greenville, convening to honor 22 finalist companies in the 2011 Silver Crescent Awards for Manufacturing Excellence -- the most-prestigious award in South Carolina manufacturing. Mixing and mingling were industry and political leaders, media, educators, suppliers and business executives from across the region, including South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt, this year's keynote speaker.
The program, co-sponsored by Marketplace Staffing, honors manufacturers for their contributions to education, workforce, the environment, and product or process improvements. Receiving top honors were Small Manufacturer Cox Industries of Orangeburg, Midsized Manufacturer Domtar Paper Company-Marlboro Mill of Bennettsville, and Large Manufacturer Robert Bosch of Charleston.
"We are pleased to salute the 2011 Silver Crescent Award winners," said Jason Mitchell, Marketplace Director of Sales and Marketing. "Secretary Hitt's comments about the importance of manufacturing to South Carolina's long-term prosperity are right on target, and we are gratified to draw such an outstanding collection of leaders from industry, government and the private sector to the event."
