Improve Performance, Save Money with Contract Staffing

Savings light bulbAs the economy improves, organizations need skilled workers.  Why are so many now implementing contract staffing relationships?

Contract staffing offers flexibility to respond to demand cycles or augment core competencies.  A quality staffing organization provides:

  • Thorough screening according to position specifications
  • Highly qualified personnel
  • Rapid response
  • Continuous recruiting so workers are always available

Benefits of contract staffing include:

Flexibility -- By flexibly adding contract professionals, you can provide extra support or infuse critical knowledge as needed

Cost savings - Since a contract staffing agency pays employee state and federal payroll taxes, worker's compensation, benefits and professional or general liability insurance, you save money

Expertise -- Many staffing agencies specialize by industry, so they can provide precisely the skill sets that you require

Liability - By using a staffing firm's employees, you avoid liability for workers comp, professional/general liability, payroll taxes and unemployment claims

Time - Recruiting, screening and hiring employees takes time.  Having a professional staffing organization deliver 1 -- or 100 -- qualified candidates is highly efficient

The Importance of Job Descriptions
Job Description
A good job description is a key tool in managing any organization, while poorly written or out-dated job descriptions can be a barrier to effective management.

A job description should:

  • Set clear job expectations
  • Give managers guidelines to hire, promote and supervise employees
  • Help support hiring, disciplinary, promotion, compensation and termination decisions
  • Help an employer comply with numerous legal requirements.

Typically a job description consists of:

  • A job summary - an overview of the position and brief description of important functions
  • Job requirements - education, certifications and experience needed
  • Job functions - a detailed description of duties
  • Other information - other important facts including hours, travel and physical requirements, etc.

Preparing accurate job descriptions is important, but job duties often change over time.  To keep your job descriptions current and accurate:

  • Include the effective date and date of revision on every job description
  • Confirm that the job description is current before posting an open position
  • Keep the job description up-to-date as part of your performance review process

To avoid problems, be sure to review all job descriptions on a set schedule.  You'll be glad you did.

Avoid Discrimination in Dress Codes
Dress codes

You want your employees to reflect competence and professionalism. A company can impose a dress code and appearance policy, provided it does not discriminate.

But if your policy isn't in writing, or doesn't serve a legitimate business purpose such as productivity or safety, you could face headaches.

If you expect employees to wear uniforms, you may have to cover the cost, depending on states you operate in. And a dress code cannot treat some employees less favorably based on their national origin.

The Civil Rights Act requires employers to reasonably accommodate religious practices of employees, unless it creates an undue hardship for the business... a tricky determination.  Be prepared to make a good faith effort to accommodate religious preferences.

While navigating the dress code waters isn't easy, employers are entitled to set standards and expect staff to follow them. Make sure policies don't favor one group over another and that they serve legitimate, defensible business purposes. And once a policy is in place, enforce it consistently.
