An artificial heart. A better airline. Chocolate. A soccer shirt made of plastic water bottles. All from one simple word: innovation.
Companies on Fast Company's Most Innovative 2011 list have chosen to zig while others zag. And with business littered with companies battling broken models with cutbacks, layoffs and lawsuits, tomorrow will be ruled by innovators. They scrap convention. They're willing to fail. Retaining and Attracting
Top Employees |
As the economy picks back up, companies concerned about retaining top performers and attracting new ones are starting to offer non-monetary benefits, surveys show.
What perks are they offering? Continuing education/training, flex scheduling, and mentoring top the list.
Perks can be a cost-effective way for employers to reward and retain staff or attract new employees, and the most popular incentives today are those that aid in career development or give employees some control over work schedules.
Here's a rundown on perks being offered:
- Subsidized training/education - 29%
- Flexible work hours or telecommuting - 24%
- Mentoring programs - 24%
- Matching gift programs - 13%
- Free or subsidized meals - 11%
- On-site childcare, fitness center or cafeteria - 11%
- Subsidized transportation - 10%
- Sabbaticals - 8%
Training and education is highly valued and helps develop a more skilled workforce. Flexible work arrangements cost little to implement but show that a company values its staff and their work-life balance. And both can go a long way to attracting, and retaining, your top performers. |

Background Checks Help With Hiring
Checking backgrounds of potential employees used to be simple -- just a matter of asking around if applicants were reliable and honest. Today, things are far more complex - but conducting background checks can reduce legal exposure if a problem occurs. Lawsuits from lack of due diligence can potentially cost you thousands of dollars in legal fees and damages. As companies have downsized HR departments, background checks are increasingly outsourced to licensed professionals, most of whom charge a reasonable fee. Areas often examined include: - Academic credentials
- Previous employers and professional licensing
- Department of motor vehicle records
- Gaps in resumes
- Indicators that a person is not living beyond his means
- Criminal record checks
Have the results of a background check in hand before you hire someone. It's better not to find out about surprises after an employee is on the payroll, and checks often turn up positive news. You may find out that a potential employee has an excellent reputation, and you can sleep better knowing you made the right decision. |

Ethical and Effective Firing
In business, some hires turn out to be less-than-stellar employees. While firing is difficult, keeping a poor employee may hurt morale or cost you business.
Here's what you should do if you find that you need to terminate an employee:
Document everything -- Document every violation committed by any employee, including date and time. Be sure to tell them each time a violation is committed. Constant feedback is essential, so have honest conversations along the way.
Be blunt and brief -- Before firing an employee, gather your thoughts. Then be blunt, honest and brief. The shorter the talk, the less room for emotion. Have a checklist and cover all essentials -- reasons, final paychecks, COBRA, then collect keys and walk them out.
Stick to your plan -- Don't go over everything they've ever done wrong; be succinct. Know what you are going to say.
Know the law -- In some states, you must provide information on unemployment benefits, pay accrued vacation time or offer to extend health benefits. Have your ducks in order... in advance.
Be kind -- Be kind and be respectful. Many will stand up, shake your hand and thank you. |
