| Smart Companies Looking to Temporary Staffing |
Demand is growing for temporary workers across the United States as organizations begin to see silver linings in the economy emerge and seek talent to meet expanding needs, according to the nationally respected Palmer Forecast 2nd Quarter 2010 study. First quarter demand grew at 3.6% over 2009 -- better than anticipated - and second quarter growth is forecast at a robust 10.8% increase thanks to improving GDP growth and decreasing unemployment. "The 2010 second quarter forecast shows continued steady improvement and a sharp increase in demand for temporary workers," said Greg Palmer of the Palmer Forecast. "Labor markets are showing sustainable signs of improvement and, while consumer spending is still sluggish, temporary help is beginning to see marked improvement." Temporary staffing, which historically is the first job category to improve at the beginning of an expansion, is showing good growth early on, said Palmer, as is Industrial staffing. "We believe that orders are increasing, optimism is growing, and while every business is being attentive to their bottom line and to their human capital investments, they are looking to strategically add talent to better their organization," said Ray Lattimore, president and CEO of Marketplace Staffing. "Positioning themselves now with flexible, temporary staffing solutions allows them to ramp up to meet customer demand as the orders arrive, and will allow their organizations to emerge from this recession better prepared to grow and enhance their profitability once again." |

Employers Get Payroll Tax Holiday for New Hires
As businesses start to emerge from the economic doldrums and consider adding staff, a new payroll tax benefit is now available to many. Normally, employers must pay their share of Social Security taxes on employee wages -- currently 6.2 percent on the first $106,800 of wages. But President Obama's signing of the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act (HIRE) excuses an employer from paying its share of the tax on wages received by "qualified employees" for wages paid from February 3 to the end of 2010. The maximum value for each qualified employee is $6,621. "Qualified employees" must:
- Begin work after February 3, 2010 and before January 1, 2011
- Have not been employed more than 40 hours during the prior 60 days (ending on the start date)
- Not be replacing another employee unless the former employee separated from employment voluntarily or for cause
- Not be related to the employer and not own more than 50 percent of the business, directly or indirectly
Employees can be full-time or temporary and there is no minimum requirement for hours worked. The tax forgiveness does not apply to the Medicare portion of payroll tax. The exemption officially begins with wages paid in the second calendar quarter of 2010. Consult with your tax adviser to ensure you comply with all documentation rules.
