Offering Feedback -- with Tact
tactful womanThe number one reason employees perform below par is they don't know what they're doing wrong.

Whether you're dealing with an entry-level employee or a top manager, feedback is critical and leads to a more productive workplace. Even when people understand their jobs, they're generally looking for ways to learn and improve. Annual performance reviews help by giving employees an overall idea of how they're doing. But that isn't enough.

One way to do this, of course, is by offering praise. Simply telling employees that they're doing a good job inspires them and boosts their productivity.  But equally important is constructive criticism.

Point out weaknesses, but be careful to provide concrete suggestions that employees can use to improve their performance. Many managers worry that correcting employees will make them quit.

However, it's more likely they'll bolt from the frustration of continually falling short of personal and company goals. In the long run, it's better to tell your staff in a sensitive manner what's wrong and how to fix it.

Helping employees be more fulfilled lowers turnover and helps your company maintain a healthy bottom line.
Engagement Key To Keeping Top Staff

You've managed to attract and retain good employees. Now, what can you do to keep them motivated and productive?

Today's employees have needs in the workplace beyond compensation and benefits -- many relating to bosses, work relationships and environment. If needs are not met, top employees may be gone before you see a problem.

To determine how satisfied your staff is, see how engaged they are. Engagement is a measure of how emotionally committed employees are to their jobs.

HR studies show that highly engaged employees have higher scores in client satisfaction, productivity and loyalty to their places of employment.  They remain employed longer and have a rising level of production over time.

Employees who are actively disengaged can discourage productivity in others. Nobody wants employees like that description around your customers and staff.

To determine your staff members' levels of engagement, consider a survey, which allows for confidential responses. Or commit to a meeting to allow  opinions to be expressed.  Use an open communication style. When an issue is raised, take responsibility to report back on progress. This will help to
build trust with employees that input matters.

Whatever approach you use, it should be geared towards learning about what matters to your employees at work and incorporating those attributes into the workplace. Such recognition initiatives can be a powerful motivator to create a high level of employee engagement.
