Sports Update
Wanted: PBC Sports Chairpeople for 2012-13

As we move into the last few months of this school year, the PBC will begin looking for enthusiastic parents to take over PBC roles for the coming school year.  In an effort to get the next chairpeople plenty of  information and an easy transition, we are already beginning to look for 1 to 2 parents to help chair the PBC Sports program next year.  This program is just 1.5 years old and is in growth mode, so lots of new ideas are welcome!  We have many parents who hope to see increased sports opportunities for their child(ren) throughout their time at Westwood, so this is a great opportunity to help make some of those hopes become a reality.  This position does not require more than 1-2 hours a week and can be split between  2 parents easily. It's also a great way to get to know the school athletic staff and administration as you collaborate with them for the next year's events.

If you are interested in helping chair this program next year, please contact Mary Anne Lucas at grover711@me.com.  Mary Anne is happy to spend time going over what is entailed and answer any questions you might have.

Hoops in the Highlands

The PBC will be helping teams who are interested register in this year's "Hoops in the Highlands" 3v3 basketball tournament.  This is a one-day tournament, held on Saturday, March 24th.  Boys and girls of all skill levels in the 1st through 8th grade are eligible for participation.  We encourage you to talk with classmates about forming a team for this great event.  A parent coach will be required and rosters are 3-4 players each.   For more information and a great promo video, please visit the event website at : www.hoopsinthehighlands.net. Their site will updated with more info in the coming weeks.

The PBC will be happy to help with registering any interested teams, but teams are certainly allowed to register on their own.  Let us know if you decide to register, as we love to  show off our great student athletes in our publications and at pep rallies! Registration OPENS FEBRUARY 8th and CLOSES MARCH 4th. So for now, be working on recruiting your team for the event.

Marathon Kids:

Our Final Mile date is coming soon!  On March 24th, our Marathon Kids will be taking their final lap in their 26.2 mile journey this year!  Families have worked hard to  incorporate healthy diet and exercise into their lives over the past 6 months. In January, I received one update from the Lively family that really captured the great spirit of this program:

"Julian and River have logged 14.25 miles so far.  The Lively family made the decision to use this as an opportunity to explore local walking trails around the Dallas area and to only count the miles we did together at these dedicated family outings.

We've hiked the Hoot Owl Trail, the Sycamore Trail and enjoyed the animatronic dinosaur exhibit along the Laughlin Loop at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary.  We enjoyed one day at the Duck Creek Trail in Richardson, where we stopped to feed the many ducks after logging our miles.  We have also walked/run at White Rock Lake, the Spring Creek trails and the trails at Breckinridge Park in Richardson."

Our Westwood families have truly embraced the  value of this program through family time, family dinners, exploring new trails and even getting the family pets in shape with them! A huge congratulations to all who have participated!  We look forward to sharing your success at the Final Mile in March!
