SoGo Active: Funding Sport Participation for Youth (13-19) |
|
SoGo Active is a program launched by ParticipACTION and funded by Coca-Cola Canada ($5 million in Canada over the next five years). Unilike any other initiative, Sogo Active's unique "for youth by youth" approach gives young Canadians the tools to design, change and control their own get active plan.
SoGo Active capitalizes on the ability of young people to encourage their peers to engage in healthy living. SoGo Active also helps break down the economic barries faced by youth trying to participate in sport by providing access opportunities in the community (hosts) and micro grants.
The youth participants register online at www.sogoactive.com. Once registered in the program, youth can create a profile for themselves, as well as find a wide range of physical activities, both traditional and non-traditional, to participate in. Youth participants set and track their active living goals online, as well as network with peers and arrange group activities. The funds are used to offset the cost of sport participation for youth. The funding goes to the operating costs (facility, coaching, travel, nutrition), which would hopefully, reduce the registration cost for each participant. How to Apply: 1) Members of the sport team/dance team, etc. (ages 13 to 19) go on-line to register (name, birth date, e-mail address; parent's information is requested as a safety measure);
2) Their coach goes on-line and registers as the "Community Host"
3) One athlete/team member completes the Application Form.
**Each team can apply for funding more than once (e.g., $500.00 for coaching; $500.00 for facility rental; $500.00 for travel, etc.).
Megan Sutherland is the Provincial Coordinator of the program for Ontario. She has offered to help the youth complete their applications for funding.
Please forward this information to your contacts in the community so Niagara can capitalize on what the program has to offer!

| Niagara Helps U15 Boys Team Capture Gold in Kamloops, BC |
|
The U15 Boys provincial team won the national championship on August 9th, finishing with a record of 6-0. In the finals they faced off against British Columbia and put together their best effort of the tournament completely dominating the game from start to finish.
The team went through a series of open tryouts, training camps and exhibition games beginning in late April in preparation for the national tournament in early August.
Team member Patrick Pilato is a St. Catharines resident, who plays for St. Francis High School. Head Coach Brad Rootes, a Niagara Falls resident commends Patrick on his growth as a player, "Patrick continued to get better and develop the whole summer, at the national finals he played the best I have ever seen him play! He is poised to have a great season of basketball this year...he deserves it! He worked extremely hard all summer!"
Coach Rootes would also like to recognize the efforts of Assistant Coach Craig Steel, who is also the Varisty Team Assistant Coach at Brock University; as well as contributions of General Manager Bryan Blue who is a graduate from the Department of Sport Management at Brock University.
