| Launch of the Niagara Sport Commission:
Building a stronger Niagara through sport |
June 23, 2009 saw the launch of the Niagara Sport Commission, a nonprofit entity created to leverage the economic and health benefits of sport for the betterment of the residents of Niagara.
The purpose of the Commission is to coordinate and support the efforts of local organizations to attract and host sporting events, and in their efforts to deliver high-quality sport and physical activity programs.
Our vision is for a healthy community that is sustained by coordinated efforts among partners to use sport to secure resources that enhance the economic, social, and physical well-being of the residents of Niagara.
The guiding principles of the Niagara Sport Commission include:
- Equity - all residents of Niagara have an equal right to participate in sport;
- Access & inclusion - individuals will not be denied access to sport for any reason;
- Fun - the joys of participating are at the essence of sport;
- Fair play & respect - play by the rules and respect teammates, coaches, and competitors.
- Advocacy - responding to and working on behalf of sport participants, volunteers, and organizations;
- Cooperation & collaboration - working together is central to goal achievement.
Sport holds promise to build a stronger Niagara. This promise stems from sport's ability to attract visitors, to engage our families, and to increase the health and wellbeing of business and citizens alike. |
| Key Tasks for the Niagara Sport Commission: |
- Build partnerships among sport, business, tourism & community organizations;
- Promote sport and physical activity programs at the grassroots level;
- Bid for and host sport events, tournaments, & major games;
- Support local sport clubs in their efforts to host sport events;
- Recruit, train, & recognize the efforts of volunteers;
- Develop sustained sources of revenue for community sport organizations;
- Use sport to foster community identity & social inclusion;
- Facilitate equity and access to sport programs and facilities;
- Advocate on behalf of athletes, volunteers, sport clubs.
