AALI Celebrates 10 Years of Philanthropy
2009 marks AALI's 10th anniversary of achievement. African-Americans in the community have consistently given gifts of their time, talent and treasure to improve the quality of lives for thousands here in the Triangle over the last 10 years.  Look for additional anniversary events to come throughout this year. You won't want to miss out on the grand celebration!

Jas/Queron

Greetings!
It has been an honor to serve as the co-chairs for Triangle United Way's (TUW) African- American Leadership Initiative (AALI) for the past two years. We are proud that we were able to work with United Way to bring important issues to the forefront, including discussion panels, community impact tours, media coverage and our "Big for a Day" initiative. These issues have become even more relevant to us personally as we welcome our first child into this world and collectively as we all celebrate the first African-American President of the United States of America.

During the past two years we have also been able to, with your help and leadership, increase the number of African Americans donating to TUW at $1,200 or more by 5 percent. African-Americans have a rich history of generosity and this increase in TUW's donor base is even more evidence of that generosity.

We hope you will continue the dialogue and movement for change with AALI's new Leadership, Autrice Campbell Long and Fatima Dean.

Thanks again for the opportunity to serve,

Queron and Jasmine Smith

New Leaders for a New Year!

AALI welcomes Mrs. Autrice Campbell-Long, VP & Community Development Manager of SunTrust Banks, Inc. and Fatima Dean, Underwriting Team Leader-Southeast & Central Regions of The Redwoods Group as the new executive team.  Campbell-Long will serve as the chair, while Dean will serve as the vice-chair for AALI's efforts throughout 2009.

Both women bring a plethora of experiences to the AALI team and have served on the AALI steering committee in previous years.  Most recently, Campbell-Long spearheaded the first Big for a Day event, held in January of 2008 and Dean was instrumental in the success of the 2008 AALI Fall Gathering.

For the past few years, AALI has focused its efforts on mentoring as the best practice to help close the achievement gap amongst African-American students.  This year, AALI is introducing the "AALI Mentor of the Year Award." This award will represent the true AALI spirit and will be presented in the fall to the AALI member who has volunteered the most hours as a mentor throughout any non-profit organization in the Triangle community.  Stay tuned for additional information on this award and award application!

AALI Member Profile:  Sheldon Cole
AALI Member Since 2006

How did you become interested and/or involved in philanthropy? AALIMember

"I am a by-product of the United Way, as I attended the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club growing up.  I remember never having to pay for anything and playing basketball and going to other events in the community.  That experience impacted me so much that I wanted to give back to my community."

What do you do at RH Donnelley? How long have you been there?

"I work as a trainer, mostly out of the Morrisville area and I've been with the company for 13 years. RH Donnelley publishes the Yellow Pages and also concentrates on some internet advertising for small to medium size companies.  We publish close to 450 directories under Sprint (Embark), AT&T and Dex brand names."

What do you love most about your job?

"Being a trainer.  I love talking and working with people, helping them improve their skills.  I've trained between 200-300 people in 2007."

If you had it, how would you invest a million dollars?

"I would invest in the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club---I would build them a new facility.  I've never forgotten that experience.  I would also give some to the United Way because so many people need help and they can disperse the money where it needs to go."

What is your favorite quote?

"My own. 'Do not complain...it could always be worse!'"
