Signs on the Way

The faithful around the Anglican Communion have a unique opportunity for Bible study with their bishops during the upcoming 2008 Lambeth Conference of Bishops. "Signs on the Way" -- focusing on St. John's Gospel and complementing the Bible studies in which the bishops and their spouses will take part during the Lambeth Conference -- is now available on the web.

Your input is invited for planning process

The rector and vestry have begun a planning process focused on ways to stimulate participation and growth in pursuit of our mission.  The diocese has recommended Friendswood consultant Chris Turner and we have retained her to assist us in the first stage of the process.  She is in the process of conducting interviews.  If you have phoned or emailed Chris and have not heard back from her, please be patient.  She will be in touch to schedule a time to talk.

Trinity Logo Clear

Wear your Trinity lapel pin!

By wearing your Trinity lapel pin, you invite others to ask about its significance, thereby providing a natural opportunity to speak about your church and its meaning for your life.  If you do not own a lapel pin, you may purchase one at a cost of $5 in the parish office.  The pin displays the arms of Trinity Church, the same as our banner.

Choir on Vacation
The Choir is on its Summer Vacation.  Take a moment to let our choristers know how much their ministry means to us and wish them a safe and restful vacation.  They will return in September.

Harriet Latimer & Associates selected for Capital Campaign
Trinity Church & Logo The vestry has engaged the firm of Harriet Latimer and Associates to serve as professional fundraising consultants on the next phase of Trinity's sanctuary restoration project.  Harriet and Truett Latimer are well-respected, experienced, and successful fundraisers from Houston who have ties to Trinity and are enthusiastic about our campaign.  This phase will focus on grants from foundations and other entities, governmental support, and "Friends of Trinity" who also have ties to our historic parish.  We also plan to develop a memorial program to recognize gifts contributed in honor or remembrance of loved ones.

The priorities that the vestry has established to be funded through this campaign are:  retirement of debt from life and safety work already accomplished, sanctuary column repair, protective covers for stained glass windows, repair of Tiffany altar window and Nativity window, repair of plaster in sanctuary, and new and renovated restrooms.  Total funding needed for this phase of our restoration is approximately $2.5 million.  If these highest priority projects are successfully funded and additional support is available, improvements to electrical and lighting systems and an architectural assessment of Eaton Hall are secondary priorities.

Harriet and her firm intend to begin immediately and the vestry will keep you informed as the campaign progresses.  You can help by letting the rector, Harry Kelso, or Susan Duif know if there are people with ties to Trinity who live in other cities and might be interested in supporting our efforts.

Children's Christian Formation

During July and August, we will have Veggie Tales Hour at the usual Sunday School time, 10:15 a.m.. Enjoy popcorn, goldfish and juice spending time with Larry the Cucumber, Junior the Asparagus and Bob the Tomato.  We will need one or two parents each Sunday to sit with the children during the movie.  Diocesan policy requires us to have two-deep leadership in activities with children.  You must have taken the Safeguarding God's Children training. If you will help, contact Karen Peterson.

Godly Play Room Tidy Up Day
The Children's Ministry Team is planning a tidy up of the Godly Play room and nursery on Sunday July 20 directly after second service.  Arrangements are being made for food and childcare.  You are invited to help!

Exciting News!
Parish Directory soon to be available online

Parish Secretary Melissa McWilliams is busy making preparations to launch a new online parish directory.  Members will be able to access it in a password protected section of www.trinitygalv.org around the end of July.  Each member's record will contain basic contact information, including email address that can be clicked to send a message, a map to help you find the person's residence, and a photograph.  If you have a favorite photo you would like to be used on your record, please email it to Melissa McWilliamsor bring a copy to the parish office for her to scan.  Or, look for one of our photographers after worship on Sunday morning.  We want photos of individuals as well as group photos.  Also, if you have reason to believe your contact information is out of date, let Melissa know so she can update it before launching this new resource.  This new resource will further the Vestry's goal of improving our ability to recognize and communicate with one another in building community at Trinity.

The Adult Sunday School Class
The Adult Sunday School Class, meeting in Rosenberg Parlor on Sundays at 9:15 a.m., is  studying the Sunday scriptures throughout the summer months.  Class leadership will be shared by members.

Summer Writing Institute
The 4th Annual Trinity Episcopal School Summer Writing Institute will be held Monday through Friday, August 4 through 8.  The program will again be taught by Ms. Catherine Jackson who teaches Advanced Placement classes in the English Department at Ball High School during the regular school year.  Designed for rising 10th and 11tth graders, the class will meet each morning from 9 until Noon.  The focus will be on the ability to analyze and then to transfer that thinking to paper.  These skills are essential for the writing components of the SAT and the English AP exams.  The class is open to Trinity graduates as well as others with appropriate recommendations.  Please contact our school office at 765-9391 for more information and/or the program application.

A PLACE OF WELCOME

The French word, foyer, means a hearth or fireside, suggesting a small group, relaxed, open, and accepting to one another. We had four wonderful Foyers Groups during the past year. They all came together on June 1 for hors d'oerves and an outing in Galveston Harbor on Seagull II. New Foyers Groups will start up again at Trinity in September and you'll want to be involved.

These casual groups of six to ten randomly-selected people (couples and singles) will meet once a month or so for an informal dinner and conversation from October until June. They typically meet in people's homes; however, other arrangements can be made. Foyers groups are a fine way to join a small group of other church members that you would not otherwise have the opportunity to know and enjoy an occasional evening or afternoon of fellowship. Typically these are "potluck" suppers, but the emphasis is on the friendship, rather than on the food.

Further information will appear in the church bulletins and The Parish Messenger in August. The goal is to sign you up in August. We will have a coordination meeting in early September and begin meeting soon thereafter. Trinity people have so much to offer, and Foyers Groups provide a great opportunity to find out just how much as we build relationships.  Jon and Suzette Schultz have graciously agreed to serve as coordinators for Foyers again in the coming year.
