From the Rector

Sunday's Gospel is John's account of the raising of Lazarus. It is easy to be so focused on the miracle that we miss something that happened afterwards.
When Lazarus died, his body was anointed with spices and wrapped in linen cloths, according to custom. I've been to the tomb that is considered to be that of Lazarus and I have to tell you that I have no idea how Lazarus was able to walk at all while still in his shroud, let alone walk out of THAT tomb! Nevertheless, when Jesus commanded him to come out of the tomb, Lazarus obeyed. He who had been stone cold dead now stood there alive for all to see. The witnesses to this miracle must have been dumbfounded, speechless, and paralyzed. Here's the part you don't want to miss: Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
Today's followers of Jesus have so many opportunities to witness his works in the lives of people around us. When we do, it is our duty and our joy to unbind them and let them go. They have a story to tell, good news to share, and are living proof of the transforming power of God. When we encourage and empower them to do their Gospel work and live their new life to the fullest, we are continuing the ministry of unbinding and liberating that was begun by our predecessors who helped Lazarus.
I'll see you in church!

Collect
Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Paper Clips: Changing the World - One Classroom at a Time Sunday, March 9
5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR YOUTH COMMUNITY
Dear Friends,
PAPER CLIPS: Changing the World - One classroom at
a time. Something amazing happened in the town of
Whitwell, Tennessee, just down the mountain from
Sewanee, a town where the population peaks at about 2,000
in the rustic Smoky Mountains. The citizens of this rural
Tennessee community are almost exclusively white and
Christian; the town was not accustomed to cultural
diversity. But in 1998 that all changed with a classroom
project at Whitwell Middle School. The "Paper Clips"
project sparked one of the most inspirational and profound
lessons in tolerance, in one of the most least likely places.
We saw the film on this project and met Linda Hooper, the
school's principal, who created the project out of her desire
to help students open their eyes to the diversity of the world
beyond their insulated valley. What ultimately happened
changed the lives of the students, their teachers, their
families and the entire town forever, and by the end, they
had a new goal: to open the eyes and hearts of people
around the world. We then made a trip to Whitwell and we
want to share our experiences and this inspirational film
with you. On March 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm we will serve
as your hosts, along with Gina Thomas, while we view the
film "PAPER CLIPS" and then have a round table
discussion led by Rabbi Jimmy Kessler from B'nai Israel.
The film was named one of the top films of 2004
(documentary) by the National Board of Review of Motion
Pictures, has been acclaimed by critics as "Oscar caliber."
See you on March 9th at 5:30 pm for the film, food, and an
interesting evening.

Help Wanted!
We have openings in the following positions:
Tour Guides are needed for Sundays and for tour groups by appointment during the week. We want to be able to provide tours every Sunday and to respond positively to the increasing number of requests from groups. The more people out there helping us spread Trinity's story, the better!
Photographers are needed to take photos of new members and at events around the parish. All you need is a digital camera and the memory to bring it with you.
Name Badge Helpers are needed during the month of March to staff a table to renew the use of name badges among our members.
Worship Leaders are needed to sustain our ministry of Evening Prayer every weekday at 5:30 p.m. in the church.
If you are able to assist in any of these ways, please let us know by sending a message to info@trinitygalv.org. |

Name Badges
During the next month, we will be making an effort to provide a name badge for every member of the parish. If we have a name badge for you already, it will be set out on a table for you to pick up and keep. If you do not have one, there will be request forms on the table for you to fill out and turn in so it will be ready for you to pick up the following Sunday. When the process is complete, each member will bring your name badge with you whenever you are coming to worship or a function at Trinity. Since many of us will forget to bring our name badge from time to time, we will always have a supply of peel and stick name badges and marker pens on hand at a table near the entrance to the church or Eaton Hall. The Outreach Council hopes the use of name badges will increase our fellowship and help build relationships. |
