Lent is a season of reflection and preparation. As such, it is a gift the Church gives to us to help and guide us in leaving behind that which has become a hindrance to us while looking forward to that which gives us life. Many people give up something to which they may have become too attached. Fasting has been called "the prayer of the body" because when we deprive ourselves of some physical pleasure, our body cries out. We are reminded of our mortality and our human tendency to let things get in the way of God's work in our lives. Instead of satisfying the desire, we allow the sensation to move us to satisfy the soul's deeper desires by restoring our relationship with God. Prayer, searching the scriptures, service to others, almsgiving, and participation in the corporate sacramental and liturgical life of the community of faith, are among the other disciplines that help us in this process of transformation.
Signs of Lent - Each Sunday in Lent this year, we will receive a different insert that will serve as a guide for the season. These beautiful 4-page devotionals explore the stories of seven encounters with Jesus including Nicodemus, the woman at the well, and the resurrection of Lazarus, using works of art. The inserts also offer discussion questions and suggestions for through-the-week reflection at home. A DVD is also available from the Rector for individual or group use. It's a spiritual encounter that uses stunning works of art to help engage the heart and open the mind.
The Adult Christian Formation Class, which meets Sunday mornings at 9:15 in Eaton Hall, will be discussing Richard Foster's classic book, Celebration of Discipline. The book can be purchased from a local or online bookseller. Copies are also available through the Parish Office.
Our Children and Youth Christian Formation programs have special plans for their Lenten learning.
The Godly Play stories will be especially appropriate for the Lenten journey for them and their families.
Youth Lenten activities include providing a Mexican Fiesta for residents of Tideway and watching the movie Paper Clips, followed by a discussion with Rabbi Jimmy Kessler.
Mite Boxes - Also, for the first time in years, mite boxes will be available for your use. Pick up a mite box for you or your family in the narthex when you come to worship. Keep it in a place where you can make daily offerings along with prayers for the Church and the world. Bring it full to our Easter Celebration.
