What is at the Farmer's Market

I just got back in to town so I have not been able to make all my rounds and have only had a chance to visit the Kingsland Farmer's Market and Calgary Farmer's market. Here are a few highlights

Broxburn farms has the best cherry tomatoes, ever! Yellow zucchini, cucumbers and peppers

Cucumber Man- Basil, tomatoes, I got my pickling cucumbers from them and they have red, yellow and green peppers. Did you know they grow their produce in greenhouses with soil? Love that!

Sylvan Star Cheese- the best organic raw gouda, amazing brie and the best eggs in Calgary. Tell Roxana hello- Love her!

DorBel Foods- flash frozen wild caught fish if you don't have time to go to the Seafood Market and get "fresh."

Lund's Organic- I have been told carrots will be in soon. They currently have romaine, red leaf, dill, parsley cilantro, snap peas ( Abigail's favorite) and radishes. Everything here is a hit!

Angela's Olives- they have amazing green and black tapenade. I absolutely love it. It taste great topped on salads. I also mixed it in a brown rice pasta salad too. Amazing!!

Calgary Farmer's Market-

Blush Lane has delicious peaches, blueberries and cherries and all organic. They also have BC apples, love them! They carry lots of organic BC produce, Sunworks chicken and Vital Greens dairy.

You can find Sylvan Star cheese and Cucumber Man there also.

Innisfail Growers has delicious cauliflower and tomatoes. I was disappointed in their carrots. They have the best pickled beets and fermented pickles if you don't have time to make your own.

I saw a lot of new vendors but had to run. More details in the next newsletter.

Dave Conrardy

Dave Conrardy is affectionately referred to, as, Dave, "the Raw Food Trucker" in health and nutrition circles.

He literally redefined his life during the process of achieving a huge weight loss. During this time, his body rid itself of stage 1 cancer, diabetes, acid reflux disease and a number of other ailments, including kidney problems. Incredibly, he was also able to wean himself off, all but one, of the 19 prescription medications he had been taking, and off of another 6 over the counter medications.

When Dave was diagnosed with chronic kidney problems, his doctor said, "Dave, Your kidneys are leaking proteins into your blood stream. This is not reversible. There is no turning back. It's going to be all down hill from here on."

The dietary shift in Dave's life came while he was driving big rig trucks across the United States. He was addicted to the Standard American Diet,"SAD", dominated by high sugar, high fat, processed foods. Dave was eating 3 lb. of red meat a day! He was morbidly obese, weighing 430 pounds. The downward spiral had begun. He could literally feel life draining from his body. Long time friends feared they would never see him alive again.

It was at that time that he met Dave and Youdit Whiting, who were driving students of his in the trucking industry. Dave shared his fears with them, regarding his rapid decline and impending death. The couple encouraged him to change his lifestyle, and said that by doing so, he could reverse maney of his ailments and become healthy again.

The Whitings recommended several books, beginning with David Wolfe's Sun Food Success Diet System. Literally overnight, after reading the book, Dave committed to a raw food lifestyle for the next 90 days. and in the process of studying this book, learned how to have the "Best Day Ever"...every day.

Come learn Dave's exciting story and testimonies. I can't wait to meet Dave. Tickets are $31. Please call the store to register. 403-254-5991

Fermented Pickles

By Tonya Dahl

Oh how I love all the fresh produce. I have cucumbers fermenting in my basement right now! This is a super easy recipe, give it a try!

6 tablespoons sea salt ( Nature's Cargo)

1 gallon water

1 bag of pickling cucumbers

Dillweed, Garlic

Rinse cucumbers well in cold water. Soak cucumbers in very cold water for 2-4 hours. The soaking in cold water will help keep the pickles crisp. Mix the salt with the water. Place the garlic and dillweed in the bottom of a crock, add salt water and pickles. Put a lid or plate on the pickles and make sure the plate is firmly on the pickles with water over the plate. I have 2 oval crock pots and the smaller crock I used the lid, turned it upside down and put a jug filled with water on top of the lid. Put the crock in a cool place in the basement and cover. Every few days skim off scum from water for 1-2 weeks depending on how sour you want your pickles. Prior to taking them out, skim off all mold and scum and pour all water, pickles, garlic and dillweed in a glass container. The pickles will last 6-12 months. The cooler your basement the longer it will take for your pickles to ferment. Enjoy! I am currently using my plastic Tupperware bowl and it works great too.

Also: try this recipe with almost any vegetable, except tomatoes. Carrots turnout great and so do banana peppers and jalapenos are amazing fermented.

Black Pepper
The health benefits of Black Pepper Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like digestive, diaphoretic, carminative, aperient, anti spasmodic, anti rheumatic & anti arthritic, anti bacterial, anti oxidant etc.
The main components of its essential oil are Limonene, Pinene, Myrcene, Phellandrene, Beta Caryophyllene, Beta Bisabolene, Sabinene, Linalol, Pinocarveol, Alpha Termineol, Camphene and Alpha Terpenene. Apart from them, black pepper is rich in minerals and vitamins like Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Vitamin-K, Beta Carotene, Phosphorus, Potassium and Selenium.

Black Pepper oil is warming, stimulating and improves circulation, thereby giving immediate relief in rheumatism and arthritis, particularly in winters when the symptoms aggravate. It is also effective in removing toxins like uric acid from the blood, thereby benefiting people suffering from chronic rheumatism and arthritis, gout etc.

It also  helps to reduce and eliminate smoking. It is a great quit smoking aid. Call me to learn more details about this awesome oil. 403-254-5952
