RAW FOOD POTLUCK
Sunday, April 17, 2010 @ 5 PM
Raw Potluck

Our potluck is now starting at 5 pm the 3rd Sunday of every month. Please join us and bring the kids. This raw food potluck is to get more people involved in raw food preparation and the raw food lifestyle. Learn about raw foods, taste delicious recipes and meet other people who are interested in raw and living foods. We make amazingly delicious food.

Please call if you need help or have questions.

Please be prepared to talk about your dish, the preparation and the ingredients. Please bring your own plate, fork, spoon, bowl, napkin, etc.

What are Living and Raw Foods?

Raw and Living Foods are foods that contain enzymes. In general, the act of heating food over 116 degrees F destroys enzymes in food. (Enzymes start to degrade in as little as 106 degrees F). All cooked food is devoid of enzymes, furthermore cooking food changes the molecular structure of the food and renders it toxic. Living and raw foods also have enormously higher nutrient values than the foods that have been cooked.

Want to know more?

Come join us and learn how live foods can make you feel better, heal you from diseases, give you more energy and a more positive outlook in life.

Potlucks are held at

Raw Food Calgary

Kingsland Farmers Market

Greetings!

I am so happy to be home in Calgary, even if the weather is cold. Home is where your heart is and my heart belongs to my husband and my passions that I have built here with my community and all my supporters. It feels good to be back on schedule with some direction.

I learned a lot in Texas. I learned more about me, my program patterns and how I handle and deal with stress. I realize that my stress levels are affecting my health, tremendously. You can eat healthy, drink nothing but green juice, but when you are not getting proper sleep and you are surrounded by stress, it is wreaking havoc on your system. It is key that we focus on all aspects of our environment for optimum health: Nutrition, Environment, Stress, Sleep and Spirituality. By just having one out of balance keeps us from progressing.

And as much as I hate to admit this: My husband does know what he is talking about when he provides information on live blood analysis pertaining to our pancreas. I have been reading and researching about the pancreas and becoming into greater understanding on how it works and how to heal the pancreas. I plan to schedule an appointment with Cody for a live blood analysis( when he can squeeze in a freebie and I get a babysitter). I was even more inspired when I read an old blog from Elaina Love on her juice feasting blog and how much she was praising Cody as the best Analyst she has ever met. In fact, it completely changed her raw chef career and direction after seeing him.

I guess sometimes it is hard for us to accept truth from the one's we love the most until we hear it from other people.

I am also delighted to be welcoming my very good friend Sherry Strong from Australia to Journey of Health. She will be giving the most important talk you will ever hear. We have decided to reduce the price to make it more affordable for everyone to join. The cost will be $37. She will also be featured on the Breakfast TV on Friday, April 8th and she has also sent me a welcome video just for you!

MEET YOUR FARMER

Gert Lund and the Carrot's Top

Gert Lund

I absolutley love the Kingsland Market and you all know  how much I love Lund's Organic. Did you know that their soil is the focus of their farm and they grown their own fertilizer in the form of oats and legumes? They plow them into the ground for soil fertility and rotate their crops. Lund's Organic Farm is a certified organic family farm just Northwest of Innisfail.

Now to the exciting part ( not that soil isn't exciting). Lund's now has a Raw Juice and Smoothie Bar at the Kingsland Market. They will be offering Lund's fresh organic carrot and beet juice for the next few weeks and then onto fresh organic fruit juices. They are offering Green Smoothies with Lund's organic frozen kale.  Be sure to stop in an order a Hail to the Kale or a fresh carrot juice. Smoothies feature raw fruits and vegetables, no gluten, no soy, no dairy but they may eventually offer organic yogurt.

Oh! Carrots are going fast and will be gone soon! Be sure to get some this week. I am sure to get 3 large bags. I can say Lund's carrots are one of the few reasons I tolerate this cold weather!

Rhodiola Rosea

Alberta Grown Rhoziva

Rhodiola

Rhodiola rosea (also known as Arctic root, golden root, rose wort, and roseroot) is a flowering herb in the Crassulaceae family. Its genus, Rhodiola, contains some 200 individual species, although R. rosea is the only one utilized for its potential health benefits. The roots contain numerous antioxidants, tannins, flavenoids, and rosavins, an active compound believed to produce antidepressant and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. Native to northern Europe, central Asia, and parts of North America, rhodiola is common in Russia and other areas in the former Soviet Union, but can be found in cold, mountainous locations throughout the world, for rhodiola requires both high altitudes and low temperatures in order to thrive.

Nontoxic and non-addictive, antioxidant-rich rhodiola is considered to be an adaptogen. The term, coined in 1947 by Russian scientist N.V. Lazarev, refers to any plant that is safe for human consumption and does not cause side effects, treats a wide variety of illnesses and conditions, alleviates physical or mental stressors (including extremes of temperature, trauma, exposure to toxins, fatigue and sleep deprivation, infection, or psychological stress), and has a normalizing or "balancing" effect on the body. Like other adaptogens including ginseng, eleuthero, and ginger, rhodiola not only minimizes the harmful effects of stress and fatigue, it also restores the body to normal healthy function. Its most promising application, however, is in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Rhodiola is thought to alleviate these conditions by targeting and inhibiting the enzymes responsible for decreasing the brain's levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

We are excited to be featuring Alberta grown Rhodiola by Rhoziva.

Rhoziva can help you by lifting your mood, quieting your anxiety and jump-starting your energy.  This natural medicinal herb product is made from the adaptogen root Rhodiola rosea and it's known to balance your body's stress response systems.  Rhodiola has traditionally been grown in the extreme north of Russia, China and Europe ... and now, after years of dedicated research, Rhodiola is grown right here in northern Alberta, Canada!  It has been scientifically proven to be safe and effective and has EN approval.  Rhodiola rosea has no known contraindications.  Rhoziva is the most rigorously tested Rhodiola rosea product available on the planet.  It will prevent fatigue, reduce stress, increase memory and focus, improve mood and well-being and help improve athletic performance if you are an athlete.

From two respected physicians---comes an authoritative new book, The Rhodiola Revolution that explores the amazing healing powers of Rhodiola rosea. Compelling scientific evidence about this commonly available herbal supplement confirms its ability to help:
 melt away extra pounds
 combat fatigue
 sharpen memory and concentration
 enhance physical performance
 strengthen immune function
protect against heart disease and cancer

Avocado Salad with Creamy Lime Dressing
Avocado Salad

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 cup cashews or macadamia
juice of 2 limes
1 teaspoon honey or 1/8 tsp stevia
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
Sea salt and pepper, to taste
1 head Romaine lettuce, roughly chopped
1 small bunch cilantro, chopped
2 ripe avocados, cut into small cubes

Combine oil, nuts, lime juice, honey and cumin in a blender. Process until nuts are smooth and creamy. If needed, use water a 1/2 tablespoon at a time to reach desired consistency. Combine the lettuce and cilantro with the dressing in a large bowl. Top with the avocado pieces.

* I added cherry tomatoes and thinly sliced red onions. We used macs and the honey. Delicious!

Be sure to check out Sherry Strong this Friday on Breakfast TV for a sneak peak on her! I can't wait to hear her on Sunday.
