Why We Need MSM |
I have been researching all the supplements that I will be taking on my juice feast and when I first went raw I use to take MSM all the time. Sunfood.com gives a great explantion on how great this product truly is.
MSM is a naturally-occuring form of dietary sulfur found in fresh raw foods that are involved in the cycle of rain. MSM is deficient in foods grown in greenhouses or in foods grown through irrigation. MSM is volatile and destroyed by cooking. In the body, MSM softens leathery internal tissues by rebuilding connective tissue with elastic sulfur bonds. This is how MSM lives up to its reputation of building collagen and maintaining healthy joints. This is also why MSM increases flexibility (good for yoga), hastens recovery time from sore muscles, and is excellent for recovery from athletic injuries.
MSM works to build collagen, helping to create smooth skin, thick lustrous hair, and strong nails. MSM makes the tissues more permeable so that they may move nutrients in and toxins out with greater ease. MSM has a remarkable effect at neutralizing foreign proteins (i.e. allergens, toxins, undigested food) making it anti-inflammatory. MSM works to enhance beauty and restore vitality to our skin and joints. MSM works particularly well in conjunction with vitamin-C rich foods. This MSM comes to you as a pure white crystalline powder.
Begin use by mixing one tablespoon with two cups of pure water or fresh orange juice.
MSM provides a source of organic sulfur for the amino acids that are essential for internal cleansing and improved flexibility. These same sulfur-bearing amino acids are found in abundance within Sun Warrior Protein. This protein powder exhibits a 98% digestion efficiency rating, shuttling these essential amino acids directly to the tissues where they are most needed.
MSM powder displays a remarkable affinity for foods rich in Vitamin C. Maximum benefits may be obtained by mixing 1 Tablespoon of MSM powder with ½ teaspoon of Camu Camu berry powder in 3 Cups of water or juice. Camu Camu contains the highest levels of Vitamin C of any food in the world, making this combination extremely beneficial for immunity and essential for building supple, radiant skin.
The anti-inflammatory effects of MSM be may enhanced by combining it E3 Live, blue-green algae form Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon. This combination has the potential to reverse lower back pain and ease the suffering due to arthritis. Begin by taking one capsule 2 Cups of purified water or fresh orange juice into which you have mixed 1 Tablespoon of MSM powder.

Food & Mood Workshop with Dorit, Sunday August 30, 2009 |
I am excited to have Dorit back and she has agreed to do an all day workshop for us. This workshop will explore how certain foods affect our mood and how mood affects our food choices. To break the cycle of unconscious stuffing or munching, one must first become aware of these unsustainable choices.
This extremely eye opening workshop will explore why we relate to certain foods and eat the way we do an how to change these patterns. Be prepared for a fun, relaxed yet highly charged experience with hands on exercises and food tasting, demos and recipes to once and for all change the cycle of mood swings and poor nutritional food choices.
The workshop will be from 12pm-5pm. The aim of this introductory FOOD & MOOD WORKSHOP is to introduce participants to acknowledge that what we eat can and does affect how we feel emotionally, mentally and physically. It is therefore suited for the entire population (flesh eaters, vegetarians, vegans, raw, living food enthusiasts, diabetics, chronic pain sufferers, etc).
COST: $167
Stop in the store or call and sign up now for this course as it wil fill up fast. We will call one week prior to event for payment. Class size is limited. |
Collard Greens: Rich in Health-Promoting Phytonutrients |
Okay, I could not resist showcasing Abby. She loves her collard greens and what better way to get her loving raw food then to let her play with it. But you can love to play with collard greens too and here is why:
As members of the Brassica genus of foods, collards stand out as a nutritional superstar. It's the organosulfur compounds in collards that have been the main subject of phytonutrient research, and these include the glucosinolates and the methyl cysteine sulfoxides. Although there are over 100 different glucosinolates in plants, only 10-15 are present in collards and other Brassicas. Yet these 10-15 glucosinolates appear able to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian cancers.
Exactly how collards' sulfur-containing phytonutrients prevent cancer is not yet fully understood, but several researchers point to the ability of the glucosinolates and cysteine sulfoxides to activate detoxifing enzymes in the liver that help neutralize potentially carcinogenic substances. (These detoxifying enzymes include the quinone reductases and glutathione-S-transferases). For example, scientists have discovered that sulforaphane, a potent glucosinolate phytonutrient found in collards and other Brassica vegetables, boosts the body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression, thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly.
Sulforaphane, which is formed when cruciferous vegetables such as collards are chopped or chewed, not only triggers the liver to produce enzymes that detoxify cancer-causing chemicals, inhibits chemically-induced breast cancers in animal studies, and induces colon cancer cells to commit suicide, but has been shown in laboratory studies to help stop the proliferation of breast cancer cells, even in the later stages of their growth.
Sulforaphane may also offer special protection to those with colon cancer-susceptible genes, suggests a study conducted at Rutgers University and published online on May 4, 2006, in the journal Carcinogenesis. I know you think this does not work, but it really does. Take lots of Emergen' C while flying and it will help or eliminate jet lag. This is a great product to take camping for your kids. It is tasty and fizzy. It is refreshing to have along on car rides and if you don't think you are getting enough Vitamin C in your diet then this is a fun and tasty way to get more in. Enjoy!
