The Laws of Stewardship are rooted in the immovable ground of God's promises. They are sure and certain, truths that we can count on. They are the absolutely positive teaching of Jesus, such as the Law of Guaranteed Return that He stated like this: "Give, and it will be given to you," He said, "a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." [Luke 6:38].

The purpose behind this promise is that we be motivated to give because it's a sensible investment. Spiritually speaking, there's virtually no risk but all reward. Any gift given for God's glory is backed by the infinite resources of the Bank of Heaven. There is no doubt about it, no cause for concern, no conditions under which the return is held back or held up. It will come.

"The Scriptural Truth About Binding and Loosing"
Pastor Tommy 2009

We are going to enter what a popular news commentator coined as a famous phrase for the introduction of his TV show, "You are now entering a no spin zone." In other words, nothing but the truth and facts will be allowed to set forth the topic in which we are about to cover. This means it will not be presented with the biased slant of any cleaver human notion; but only from the interpretation of the Holy Spirit as He inspired it to say in it's original form. I pray this most needful and in-depth teaching which required a rather lengthy writing in order to open up its meaning will not find its way into the delete box. There are many things we allow to hold our attention in our fast and busy schedules that we call worthwhile. I truly hope this word will be one of those.

This past Sunday I presented my congregation with a message on a very familiar passage that most Christians have either heard or read since being a believer. There have been a great deal of interpretations of this Scripture which most of them by the way miss the mark in conjunction to how harmoniously the Bible should flow without confusion if we are listening to the Holy Spirit. Let's read our beginning text and proceed to receive a life changing revelation.

Matthew 16:19 (KJV)
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

We must acknowledge that these keys that our Lord is speaking of in this passage belong exclusively to the believer in Christ. These are obvious keys that enable every believer to operate within the realm of the spirit world, yet much of what is extracted from this passage is clearly wrong and breeds confusion rather than deliverance. Let me substantiate this teaching by looking through the Word as we look at some of the actions and methods people use in spiritual warfare. Now, I have heard of many uses of binding and loosing over the many years of being a Christian, and have discovered that most are not Scriptural in their origin; therefore, they do not accomplish much, if anything for the person that is in need. They just often give these want-to-be ministers something to do that makes them feel spiritually important and gives them a sense of control over others that are vulnerable. Case in point: these promote their ministries as being a deliverance ministry when actually they are just needing to control others to feed their own insecurity. Now, obviously there are some very solid ministries out there that are actually getting people free that idebtify themselves as a deliverance ministry and I guarantee you the successful results is because they get people to acknowledge the truth of God's Word more than getting them to jump through devil hoops. I am not trying to sound mean and ugly here, but I do think it's high time that we start addressing some of these false presentations that are doing more harm than good to the people who are stuck in life.

One of the approaches that is often applied from our Scripture above is through initiating that you must bind up the devil before you can be loosed, or the individual they are seeking to help get delivered. I have even seen people binding devils off of furniture, buildings, and all sorts of other physical things; and even heard of those who drove around cities binding up all evil activity from that particular city. I have witnessed people actually waving swords in church services imitating that they were doing spiritual warfare against demonic spirits. It's here that I fully understand why so many would be believer's, think that Christians are very strange people indeed, and therefore, they choose to avoid such foolishness and never accept God as a serious true way of life.

We are instructed from the Word of God that we wrestle not with flesh and blood; but against principalities, against powers. against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Therefore, what is most interpreted from this Scripture is fighting and wrestling these demonic forces with every kind of outward display that you can imagine. If this is what the Bible is saying here, then why is it that these so called spiritual warfare tactics that are often being used, doing so little? I believe it is because we are fighting with the wrong weaponry. I have studied the Word of God deeply on many of these subjects over the years and I must tell you that I keep finding the same theme throughout the Bible which is that the truth is what keeps our adversary in his defeated position. Not our spiritual exercises and physical efforts.

When this Word we paraphrased above (Ephesians 6:12) says we wrestle against the list of things noted: it does not mean with the physical and human applications; it simply means that we are to fight the good fight of faith. And God called this fight a good fight. Why? Because it has everything to do with receiving what God gave you. There is where the battle lies. In the mind, and if left in a carnal state it remains enemity against God's principles even though you are a Christian and gives access to these principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. When this happens then you will scratch and fight and wrestle with all the might of your flesh and with its emotions to no avail against your adversary the devil. So, essentially what you are fighting is to get your faith appropriated on the right things which the Word clarifies comes through hearing and hearing the Word of God. Whereas, the devil works to keep you trusting in the limiting natural laws of this world where we are seized with doubt and unbelief. However, if you put your faith in the truth of God's Word then your faith in the truth will shut down these dark and evil forces. Let's look at this next passage from the book of Mark and see something that can possibly help us to see this, hopefully.

Mark 5:1-5 (KJV)
1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

This account that we just read gives a rather truthful diagnosis of the foolishness of trying to use human ability to free a person who is spiritually bound. Their attempts to place this demoniac man in chains and shackles was useless in keeping him under control because his strength was influenced from the dark side of the world. This would equate as being the same to our day when we use psychology, medicine, and any other types of human treatment that we often seek out to help us through our troubles, or helping others who are under demonic influences. These supposedly remedies are limited in what they can do and cannot fully set a person free. In verse three it reveals the uselessness of trying to put shackles and chains on a demonic stronghold. These shackles and chains simply symbolize the tools of human and worldly inventions, earthly wisdom and ideas that are used to combat these evil spirits. It cannot be done. I want to share with you a real life story in hopes to make some sense out of what I am trying to convey here in this teaching.

Back in 1993, my home church was part of a major revival that broke out in Ft. Worth, Texas that was incredibly life changing. But like always the enemy comes along with a counterfeit to sow confusion where he can, to frustrate the true things of God. One particular night while we were holding meetings at our church where I was responsible for making sure that administratively everything was secure and safe around the premises so the meetings could flow smoothly without any problems. At that time I was the associate pastor in my home church and was accountable to my pastor to help him in his ministry. While my pastor was ministering that night I felt a strong sense that I needed to get up and walk down to the basement of the church. To my surprise, I walked in on three people I had never seen before in my life trying to cast a devil out of a person that had come to the meetings seeking help. I had learned later that these three people promoted themselves as having a deliverance ministry in the area.

Now here is the strange part of this story that I want to use to explain some things that we are talking about in this devotional. The Holy Spirit rose up in me so strongly that I got angry at the nerve of these folks who our ministry did not know from Adam, but had the audacity to use our assembly as an opportunity to advance their own work. Needless to say, I was upset because they had taken someone that had entrusted themselves to our ministry care, and they took them to an isolated room within our building so they could operate in their self appointed ministry. When I approached them and confronted what they were doing, it was as if I were watching some Hollywood horror movie unfold before my eyes. Their countenance changed into terror and they took off running upstairs and outside the building. I found two of them hiding in the bushes next to the church building.

I know some of you reading this are probably laughing about right now, but I kid you not this is what happened. The third person I never saw again. The point is, I end up ministering the truth of God's Word to these two self-professed ministers of deliverance for over the span of an hour, and freed them from the devils that were driving them in their own error. I essentially cast devils out of those who were supposedly attempting to free someone else. This is the reason ministries are picky about who is ministering to the people because without knowing who they are personally, they could possibly be imparting some wrong spirit or an error filled ministry to someone; and that should matter to church leadership. My friends, there is more power in the Truth of God's Word that will bring victory everytime in a person's life if they will receive it, then all the human ability and effort combined.

Therefore, when we look at the truth about binding and loosing from the holy Scriptures we need to grasp the true meaning so as to benefit from it. If we look at the word bind in a word study we will find that in the Greek it forms the idea: to bind together, to be in bonds, knit together, to tie together (Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary). Therefore, when we look at having the keys to bind on earth we need to know what this application truly means. According to the correct word meaning, if I am binding the devil then I am tying myself to the devil in thought and action; that's not freedom that is to be entangled with him on his terms. In light of this, I want you to fully understand that Jesus Christ our Lord has defeated Satan and his armies: do you agree that this is a correct assessment of Scripture? Well, let's read on then.

Ephesians 1:20-23 (KJV)
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all

Here we find that the church, which is you and I who are believers, are the actual body of Christ referred to in this passage above. Notice how it reads in verse 23, then look at verse 22 and read how it says unconditionally that God the Father has put all things under Jesus' feet and has given Him to be the head over all things to the church, His body. Therefore, we being His body have all the works of darkness under our feet. Period! No wrestling with demonic spirits is needed if the believer recognizes that our adversary is defeated and is no longer a threat simply because of the victory of Jesus Christ our Lord. However, this does not nullify the devils attempts to get you or me to believe otherwise. This is why you must know who you are in Christ. This is why it is imperative that you know the truth of God's Word, and when you know that truth it will set you free and keep you free.

Now let's consider the binding that we are referring to here in this teaching. If the devil is defeated and you know he is defeated then there is no need to bind him, right? To spend your time binding devils that supposedly are defeated is to empower them back into the battle as if Jesus never won over their kingdom. When you and I fail to enforce the devil's defeat based from the Word of God then he will rise up convincingly that he is a dominate force that has power over you, or the particular situation that you are trying succeed in. Here is something you ought to take notice of, Jesus in Scripture never bound one devil, He just commanded them to leave in the authority that He represented. We also have been given the same delegated authority to do the same works as Christ did and even greater works. When you look at the account of the seven sons of Sceva trying to cast out devils in the name of Jesus that they heard Paul use, you will notice that those devil's beat them up terribly because they did not know Christ intimately as being one of His very own followers. They were just using methodologies that they had saw and heard someone else use. Remember what those devils said to those seven brothers? Jesus we know, and Paul we know, but who are you! You see devil's tremble at the name of Jesus Christ and apparently they are very knowledgeable about the delegated authority of those who are in Christ and know their position, such as Paul that was obviously pointed out by these demons.

What we should be binding instead of devils is the Word of God over our lives. I should bind the mind of Christ over my mind. Binding the Word of health over my body. Binding the soundness of mind that comes from the position I hold according to the Word of God. Binding the Word of peace over my home and over my loved ones and things such as these from God's Word. The things that we should be loosing is ignorance, strongholds in our attitudes, loosing the desires to sin against God, loosing the lusts that we have been holding onto, and loosing the pain and bitterness that we have been clinging to. We need to loose all unforgiveness from our life and let go of every selfish agenda; loose our rebellion and unteachable ways and we will start liberating our lives from every stronghold. Look at the New Testament epistles to the church and you will see that we are instructed throughout the letters what we should let go of in order to be free. It is our responsibility to activate our will to the instructions from God's Word and refute the lies of the enemy. When we do these things then we will find freedom and liberty to overcome every obstacle that has been standing in our way; and even when the devil tries to maneuver his way into your life as being some formable adversary, you will be able to set him straight on who it is that rules in the situation. The Word of God says, he seeks whom he may devour. It does not say, whoever he wants to devour he can. Look at these Scriptures and see what things we need to bind around us.

Numbers 30:2 (KJV)
2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

Deuteronomy 11:18 (KJV)
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.

Proverbs 3:3 (KJV)

3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

Proverbs 6:21 (KJV)
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

Proverbs 7:3 (KJV)
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

The devil is still using the same old attack as he always has and that is to get you to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The person who will approach their walk with God on reasoning and logical foundations will lose their spiritual equilibrium. The devil wants you to develop a sense of lack which enforces the thought that you have not fully received what God has promised. Therefore, you are gripped with fear of what the devil is doing to you. This is why we must renew our minds to the Word of God and be transformed to its image. The Word at first comes in seed form but the more you act on it the more you will witness the manifestation as it grows. When I keep my eyes on the Lord then the devil has nothing in me. However, when my eyes move from the Lord unto my circumstances, or on the devil and his demons, then I will be in a wrestling match that will bring more defeat in my life than victory. Let's take a look at loosing before I close this teaching today.

Luke 13:10-13 (KJV)
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

Please observe that Jesus did not wrestle with demons over this woman's freedom, though it was described as a spirit of infirmity. He just told the woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. The woman must have believed it because she responded with the right results and straightened up; and the spirit of infirmity just had to leave because she believed the Word Jesus spoke to her. No fighting and wrestling needed. Just believing on the Word of Christ.

Matthew 12:28-29 (NLT)
28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.
29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man like Satan and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger-someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.

Jesus defeated Satan and plundered his goods because He was stronger. Therefore, the followers of Jesus can walk in the same authority because of what Jesus delegated to us in His name. This can only come from a person who knows who they are in God, and truly know they have all authority over every demonic influence no matter how the devil manifests himself. You might also take note that Jesus had not sacrificed Himself at the cross at this moment in our story. Needless to say, Jesus always trumped the devil whenever He walked this earth. However, when He gave Himself on the cross He set forth the rules for you and me to move in this same authority if we acknowledge that we have it and believe it. If you are having to fight to bind these devils then you are uncertain of who you really are, and the devil's radar picks up the signal that you are uncertain of your position, which is why he is able to advance against you. Here is another example of loosing to consider.

John 11:41-44 (KJV)
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

There are many things that we find ourselves bound to in this life. In other words, there are some who bind themselves to alcohol, drugs, pornography, and the many other
destructive vices that people are drawn into captivity. These are simply the grave clothes that we wear in this life that others can see. They are the signs of deadness that we carry around us for others to witness. However, when Jesus' resurrection power and authority is realized as being in you as a believer then you can cry out in the power of the Holy Spirit to loose someone from those grave clothes; and you can even loose them off of your own life. These are the keys of the kingdom of God that have been given to us: whatsoever you bind on earth is bound in heaven; whatsoever you loose on earth is loosed in heaven.

Quit trying to bind devils, just tell them to go sit in the corner and shut up. Speak the Word of God and bind it around your heart and mind and it will infuse you with great confidence. In addition, when that Word reveals an inconsistency in your life then loose it from off your life. You have been given the keys to do so effortlessly, rather than trying to fight the devil with mental games and such that we often engage in. He is defeated! The devil can only empower his position over you if he can get you to think that he is still the god over your elements. The truth of God's Word says you are more than a conqueror, and greater is He that is in you, then he that is in the world. Bind yourself to the Word of God and loose yourself from the destructive mental schemes of diseases, poverty, lust, addictions, and these sort of dead works that attempt to find their home in you. You can do this, because the Word says that if the truth has entrance unto your heart it will make you free!

I would love to hear back from my readers and give me your thoughts on this teaching that we have shared with in this weeks devotional. I pray this word is revelatory and empowers your life to walk in the victory that Christ borne for us all. God bless, and know you are much loved and appreciated by Kim and I, and the Potter's Wheel family!

Psalm 37:4-5
4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

David calls us to take delight in the Lord and to commit everything we have and do to do it unto him. But how do we do this? To delight in someone means to experience great pleasure and joy in his or her presence. This happens only when we know that person well. Thus, to delight in the Lord, we must get to know him better. Knowledge of God's great love for us will indeed give us delight.

The desires of our heart need to line up with the word of God. Take time and ask yourself what is God's will for me? I believe God wants us to prosper in every area of our life, body, soul, and spirit. If our desires are selfish and self serving, that does not line up with his word he cannot bless that. Our desire needs to be in the things that will help us grow spiritually and have an impact on the people around us. Begin to change your way of thinking, and the way you see yourself. Make sure the things you desire are in line with what God has purposed you for.

To commit ourselves to the Lord means trusting everything, our lives, families, jobs, possessions to his control and guidance. To commit ourselves to the Lord means to trust in him, believing that he can care for us better than we can ourselves. We should be willing to wait patiently for him to work out what is best for us. God knows what tomorrow will bring for all of us, live today with expectancy and hope. Wait on God and do not get in a hurry, allow yourself time to hear what God will speak to your heart.

Psalms 37:23-24
23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. 24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

If you would like to have God direct your way, then seek his advice before you step out. If you stumble do not worry just get back up and know that God's hand is extended to you and he will never let go. Make sure your desires are in the right place and get ready for the journey of a life time. Walking with God is a amazing, rewarding, and fulfilling place to be.
