President's Message
Dear Members and Colleagues,
The Mental Health Statute is up for its Sunset review in the legislative session beginning in January 2011. Work on the review occurs in 2010. Various agencies in the State government will be reviewing the Statute and likely all organizations representing practitioners covered by it. CAP will also be reviewing the Statute and preparing our proposals.
CAP has always had a lobbyist watching the Legislature and keeping us informed of any bill that appears that might have a negative effect on our right to practice in Colorado. Our lobbyist also works with the Legislature representing our views and bills we might seek to have introduced. The present Statute has provisions that have a negative impact on our right to practice. The area of dual relationships is the most contentious part of the Statute that comes to mind. But there are other aspects of the Statute that may present challenges for us.
To have an effective voice in the Legislature, especially regarding proposing changes to the Statute, CAP needs to have a larger member base. The greater our numbers, the louder our voice and the better the opportunity to affect legislation beneficial to all non-licensed psychotherapists. We need your support to ensure our right to practice is not restrained, or worse, eliminated. You are always welcome at the CAP Board meetings. If you are interested in joining us, please let me know by emailing me.

Hypnosis Training Review by Steven R. Blakely, CHT
On April 18th of this year I had opportunity to attend an excellent hypnotherapy class given by Don Mottin titled: Hypnotherapy Desk Reference: The first computerized program for the professional hypnotist
What's so special about Don Mottin's Hypnotherapy Desk Reference class?
What makes Don Mottin's class worth flying to Orlando for is, knowing that Don is a first-class hypnotist and by drawing from nearly 30 years experience he has an immense reservoir of knowledge of what works in hypnosis to share with the attendees. It was my expectation that Don's class would be worth the expense and travel based on a previous class I had attended in Orlando on "Emergency Hypnosis techniques". I was not disappointed. Even though I had to fly in from Denver and right back out that evening (while missing my connecting flight due to the blizzard in Denver) it was worth it.
Don Mottin, CI, DNGH, prior to becoming a full-time Hypnotist has worked as a policeman and later specialized in working with children using hypnosis.
The class included a compendium of hypnosis scripts in a loose-leaf binder along with the CD's to allow one to download the material to your computer and view online.
Along with numerous scripts, he covers 26 techniques: from "A-Z".
He covers not only what to say but how to say it (while the client is in hypnosis). Don's CD "Computerized Techniques" is set up with an index of issues that one might want to address using hypnosis. By clicking your mouse on the item indexed it will bring up the one or two scripts that you would be recommended to use, for example, by clicking on bruxism (teeth grinding) the program would bring up Technique D, followed by script #91, followed by Technique Z".
The loose-leaf binder not only includes material on everything from pain-control to general sports improvement to "How to develop courage", Become Success Conscious" and "Anorexia"; as just a few examples of what is covered, which is probably why he includes "The Everything CD". It seems to cover just about every situation one might expect in a hypnotherapy practice and is certainly adaptable if not explicitly covered.
Three CD's include an Audio Training CD; Computerized Techniques; and "The Everything CD". This class was presented under the auspices of the National Guild of Hypnotherapists (NGH) and there is one last class in the series of different cities Don has presented. That class is May 30th, 2009 in Toronto, Canada. (great excuse for a 'training trip' to Toronto that can be written off as a professional expense).
Don Mottin has been recognized over and over for his good work and was awarded the NGH "Educator of the Year award in 1993, 1996 and 2000, "Most outstanding Presenter" of 1994, the "Rexford L. North Award" in 1997, and the "Charles Tebbetts Award", by the NGH in 1998.
He is obviously a top-level presenter and besides knowing his material and how to work with people, he has a sense of humor that makes his classes always a pleasure to enjoy while receiving the benefit of nearly 30 years experience as a first-rate Hypnotist. I highly recommend attending Don's training classes if you want good training toward CEU's and to have a good time learning what works and what doesn't.

CAP LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AS OF APRIL 2009
CAP has been busy monitoring legislative bills that may have an impact on non-licensened psychotherapists. At this point, there has been nothing introduced to the house or the senate that would directly impact CAP members.
Of note, Bill 1086 did pass in both the House and the Senate. Here is the summary on this bill: On and after January 1, 2011, requires LICENSED clinical social workers, licensed social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, licensed addiction counselors, and level II or level III certified addiction counselors to maintain continuing professional competency in order to obtain renewal or reinstatement of a license or certificate to practice their respective professions in Colorado. This does not apply to non-licensed psychotherapists.
CAP is beginning our preparation for the Sunset Review process that will take place in 2011. There is much work to be done in the next 2 years. CAP will have representatives on committees and in meetings representing our interests as we review line by line the mental health statute and defend our right to practice in the state of Colorado.
CAP is always looking for members to help out with this process. You may be interested in participating on an active level, or perhaps would like to be "on-call" in case your opinions and testimonies are needed in the legislature. We would like representatives from our diverse membership to be represented, so contact us today! You may email us here.
Suzy Walz works closely with our CAP lobbyist to monitor all bills that pass through the legislature. This is one of the primary ways CAP works to keep your right to practice unlicensed psychotherapy in the state of Colorado safe and legal. Please continue to support this very important cause by renewing your membership, encouraging new members and participating in fund raising and educational activities. As always, the board encourages your comments and participation. You may contact us directly by email via our website or attend a monthly meeting at The People House in Denver.
