Hi There!

We will have an early deadline of Friday, May 14 at 3 p.m.

Thank to columnists and reporters who have already gotten their materials to me.

This month we welcome three new columnists: Sharla Gardener, Heath Hickock and Pam Kleinschmidt.

I know it isn't even the middle of May yet, but with Memorial Day and graduations on the horizon I need to make sure everyone gets their stories and ads in early. [My own daughter, Rebecca, will be graduating from Northland College in Ashland, WI with a major in environmental science.]

Roxana and Naomi
Roxana and Naomi

This April I attended the Midwest Journalism Conference in Bloomington, MN.

The highlight was meeting journalist Roxana Saberi. Saberi was released from an Iranian prison last May after a five-month imprisonment on charges of spying. She is originally from Fargo, ND. Since I am from North Dakota I feel a kinship to her and felt just terrible last year when the Iranian government detained her. The Hillsider Blog here.

In the U.S. we don't need government approved press credentials.

I hope to see you when I am out and about. Please read the Hillsider and send us a letter to let us know what you think.

Sincerely,
Naomi Yaeger-Bischoff

Recent scientific studies have demonstrated that contact with nature may actually help reduce the incidence of aggression and violence in inner-city neighborhoods
  • Greening neighborhoods can reduce crime

  • Kids who spend more time outside end up paying more attention inside

  • Planting trees grows stronger neighborhoods

  • Views of nature help hospital recovery

  • Participating in greening activities builds community pride
