************************************************************** The State Board of Elections and the Virginia Board of People with Disabilities Host Webcast to Educate Voters on Accessible Voting in Virginia **************************************************************
The Virginia Board of People with Disabilities (VBPD) and the State Board of Elections (SBE) have collaborated to increase knowledge about voting accessibility for people with disabilities and the aging community. Four videos (found on YouTube via http://bit.ly/vote_12 and at www.vaBoard.org or www.sbe.virginia.gov) show voters how to register, apply for an absentee ballot or annual application, vote curbside, or utilize assistance at the polls when voting on Election Day. Additionally, print materials that detail the process are available through either agency or online at their websites. Publications are available in alternate formats upon request. The goal of the project, funded with a $30,000 award from VBPD, is to improve and expand the participation of individuals with disabilities in civic and community activities. There is no greater civic right or responsibility than voting. According to Donald Palmer, Secretary of the State Board of Elections, "we want to ensure all voters, regardless of their age or disability, are ready to vote." The videos and print media, as well as a 30-minute webcast scheduled for October 2 at 2:00 pm, help educate voters, potential voters, local registrars, and staff. "Improving accessibility is key to civic engagement," noted Heidi Lawyer, Executive Director of the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities. To download Accessibility: Exercising Your Right to Vote, visit www.sbe.virginia.gov/VoterwithSpecialNeeds.html for a handy PDF guide. You can also log into http://bit.ly/WebcastOCT2 on October 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. EST to view the webcast. Videos are available above on either agency's website via YouTube. |
