Smoking Cessation and WRAP
**************************

September 20th, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

 

Gina Calhoun, Director of Wellness and Recovery Education at the Copeland Center, will present a Webinar on Smoking Cessation and WRAP.  After 15 years of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, Gina wanted to become a nonsmoker without the side effect of weight gain.  In this Webinar, Gina will share how she used the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to take back control of her life from cigarettes and how she discovered that WRAP for smoking cessation only worked when she started working her WRAP.

Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) Training in Fairfax County
***********************************************

October 22nd to 31st

 

This program includes eight (8) full-days (8:30am - 5:00pm) of classroom experiences provided by the Institute for Recovery and Community Integration and will offer an unpaid internship as a part of the training.

 

The Certified Peer Specialist Program curriculum focuses on the principles and philosophy of recovery.  The course facilitates learning by relating each session of the training encounter to the participants' personal experience of recovery, and provides practice in the core skills of peer-to-peer support.

 

A limited number of scholarships are available to pay the training fee for individuals living in Fairfax County, the Cities of Fairfax or Falls Church. Individuals from other areas are encouraged to apply bearing in mind that the COST of the training is $975 and does not include your travel, lodging or expenses.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 "Judi Chamberlin
Joy in Advocacy Award"
****************************************************

 

The National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery (NCMHR) honors one individual a year with the "Judi Chamberlin Joy in Advocacy Award".

 

This award recognizes Judi's lifetime of joyful dedication to bringing hope into the lives of individuals labeled with mental illnesses around the world. The award honors an individual who best reflects Judi's example in extraordinary achievements in disability rights advocacy.

 

The award will be presented at the NCMHR's member meeting on Oct 10, 2012; it will also be announced during the Alternatives 2012 conference.

 

NOMINATION GUIDELINES:

 

·The nominee must have the lived experience of mental health recovery.

·The nomination shall include no more than 500 words on why the nominee deserves this award.

·The nomination must include the name, phone number, and e-mail address of both the nominee and the nominator.

 

Only nominations that follow these directions will be reviewed.

 

Send nominations to Laurenspiro1@gmail.com and state on the subject line: "Judi Award Nomination". The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2012.

WRAP for Diabetes
*****************

September 18th, from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Diabetes is a serious health concern that afflicts an estimated 16 million Americans. Join certified Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator and Certified Peer Specialist, Eric Larson as he shares his experience using WRAP to create a balance for his mental health and diabetes challenges.  Struggling with Diabetes has been a harsh teacher revealing the importance of self-care and its impact on his daily life. However he has used these lessons to reflect upon how the 5 Key Recovery Concepts relate to living with Diabetes. Eric's Wellness Toolbox grows daily and he will share some simple tools that work to advance his Diabetes care one step at a time.

Friends 4 Recovery Whole Health Center Seeks Executive Director
*******************************************************

 

Friends 4 Recovery Whole Health Center is a 100% consumer run non-profit organization where individuals with lived mental health experiences can take ownership of their own recovery. We offer recovery-focused classes, a variety of groups (including a daily support group), and one on one Wellness Coaching/Peer Counseling for Chesterfield County and the greater Richmond area.

 

At Friends 4 Recovery everyone associated with the organization from all members of our staff to the Board of Directors are individuals who are living in mental health recovery. The Executive Director will be someone who has lived experiences of mental health crisis and has a strong background in recovery education (CELT, WRAP, and Peer Support Specialist preferred).

 

We are looking for an individual who has strong communication and organizational skills and has the qualifications and experience to lead Friends 4 Recovery in all aspects of running a non-profit. The Executive Director will be responsible for a variety of duties, including providing community outreach, performing administrative tasks, maintaining financial oversight, overseeing program and funds development, and skillfully supervising and managing a staff. Additionally, the Executive Director will maintain an atmosphere of wellness and support at the Center that allows the members to feel empowered as they move forward on their road to recovery.

 

Please note that we intend to expand the budget and community service capacity of Friends 4 Recovery significantly, particularly regarding employment opportunities for people with lived experiences of mental health crisis. The successful candidate should have a proven track record of skillfully and sustainably growing programming.

 

Salary - $34,500

Benefits - Health insurance with dental
