  • Selichot- On Saturday, September 8th we will recite the prayers of repentance. The Selichot service is the only Jewish worship experience which takes place in the middle of the night. Come have a nosh as we discuss and explore this years' Selichot study session. We will be watching excerpts from the Woody Allen movie "Crimes and Misdemeanors." Read more here
  • High Holiday Information- All High Holiday information has been sent electronically. This includes the letter for the President and Rabbis, Special Parking Request Form, Yizkor Memorial Book Form, Babysitting Request Form, High Holiday Prayer Book Order Form and High Holiday Food Volunteer Form. All forms need to be received by August 31st. High Holiday tickets will be mailed out the week of September 3rd. Please make sure you have filled out your Membership Commitment Form in order to receive your tickets.
  • High Holidays 5773- Rosh Hashanah begins Sunday evening, September 16th at 8:15 PM, Yom Kippur will begin with Kol Nidre on Tuesday evening September 25th at 8:15 PM. For all holiday service times, click here. High Holiday tickets will be mailed out the week of September 3rd.
  • Rosh Hashanah Honey- This year you can send a Sweet New Year message to friends and family. The Gift Shop is sponsoring a program where you can spend an 8 ounce jar of kosher honey in time for Rosh Hashanah. Ordering is easy, click here for more information.
  • We need your help- It has been a long tradition that Sisterhood provide the food for all the High Holidays. Read more here.
  • High Holiday Food Drive- On Rosh Hashanah morning the High School students will hand out grocery bags and ask that you fill them up with non-perishable items and bring them back Yom Kippur morning. The food drive will be benefiting Christ the King Food Pantry.
  • Sukkot- Congregation Etz Chaim will celebrate the beginning of Sukkot with a joyous service, Sunday, September 30th at 7:00 PM. Read more here. Now is the time to place your order for your own Lulav and Etrog. The cost is $55. Please contact the office to order yours. The deadline for ordering is September 14th.

Board Highlights

Starting this month, I will be highlighting news from the monthly meeting of the Etz Chaim Board of Directors, in the E-Bulletin. My purpose in sharing these "Board HIghlights" is to provide a wider group of congregants with more infomation about what is going on at Etz Chaim, and therfore, I hope, drawing more of you into closer connection with congregational life.   • Torah Study- The regular session of our Torah Study group will resume on Saturday, September 8th. We meet on Saturday mornings at 9:00 AM. We study the text of the Bible in sequence. Read more here.
  • Intro to Judaism- Rabbi Bob and Rabbi Cosnowsky will be teaching a 17 week course covering topics about living Jewishly. Read more here.
  • Library News- In an effort to keep our collection fresh, the Library Committee has many books that we want to offer directly to our community. Everyone wins: we get more space on our shelves and you get the opportunity to take home some great books for your own collections! Please stop by the FREE BOOKS! cart beginning on Sunday, September 9th and help yourself to as many books as you like.
  • Sisterhood News- The Connections Team is pleased to announce that Sisterhood will continue Mah Jongg Monday evenings at the synagogue. Read more here.
  • Lifelong Learning Programs-Save the Dates- Annual Three Synagogue Programs at Temple B'nai Israel, Aurora, Sunday, October 21st at 7:00 PM. Dr. Allan Gould, author, journalist, lecturer, speechwriter and humorist will speak. In collaboration with Spertus our Lifelong Learning and Library Committees present One Book/One Community author talk on Sunday, December 2nd 2:30-4:00 PM at Etz Chaim.

 

School & Youth Activities
  • Religious School News- The Religious School classes are filled on a first come basis and are filling up fast, please make sure to return all your forms. The first day of Hebrew school is Wednesday, September 5th and the first day of Religious School is Sunday, September 9th. 
  • Shabbat Chaverim- Our program "Shabbat Chaverim" will start up again on Friday morning, September 21st at 10:00 AM. This program is for young children and a parent/guardian. Read more here.
Congregational Life
  • First Day of Religious School Barbeque- Don't forget to join us for a barbeque at 11:45 AM, after the first day of school on September 9th. We will provide great food and great entertainment. Bring the entire family. The event is sponsored by those great chefs from the Brotherhoood.
Did You Know
  • Manna- It's that time of year again to begin thinking about Etz Chaim's primary fundraiser. The first Manna for the year is Sunday, September 9th. The Manna Gift Card program provides an easy, no cost way to raise funds for our congregation while receiving 100% value for every dollar you spend.   • Wanted College Student Addresses- In order to keep our college students connected to the Etz Chaim community, we need both regular mailing addresses and email addresses of freshmen as well as returning college students. Addresses are not saved from school year to school year, so we need addresses even if you sent them in past years. Please send address information to the synagogue office by email.
  • Register for Fall Programs at OSRUI- Mah Jongg & Canasta Weekend, Mother & Daughter Kallah, Shabbat Shira, Father & Son Kallah.
