Trend Watching: Foresight
I've always been a trend watcher and believe, as
Malcolm Gladwell says in Blink, that the key to
good decision making is not knowledge, but rather
understanding. It's always better to plan for difficult
times before they occur. That way, you can act logically
not emotionally.
Being a trend watcher means that you have to
assess the big picture. Learn to think, anticipate, and
stay ahead of the crowd. In The Millionaire
Mind, Stanley says most decamillionaires attribute
their success in part to choosing the right vocation
and thinking differently from the crowd.
Thinking differently from the crowd means these
individuals picked a vocation they not only love but that
is ideal based on their abilities, aptitudes, and strong
interests. These individuals report seeing
opportunities that others didn't and finding a niche
with few competitors, giving them the best opportunity
to win. You don't want to be like salmon swimming
upstream!
To stay ahead of the crowd, you must anticipate
strategic events and develop an action plan based on
an anticipated event or lack of an anticipated event.
Plan for potential obstacles and what you'll do to
overcome them if they occur.
The World Future Society, publisher of The
Futurist, just released a special report of its top 20
forecasts for 2010-2025 that are likely to affect your
employment, family, and investments. According to
this report, the most critical skill for the 21st century is
foresight. The author calls foresight the secret
ingredient of success.
Some may see the futurists' forecasts in this
report as far-fetching or even weird. You may wonder
how some of these events could possibly affect your
life, vocation, or family, but people used to think
computers, cell phones, and other similar devices
were fantastical before they became ubiquitous and
revolutionized how we communicate.

| More Employers Using Twitter for Recruiting |
| |
For those of you who wonder about the value of
Twitter, the micro-blogging website, here's a new
factoid. More employers and recruiters than ever
before are using Twitter for recruiting. The New
York Times reports that Twitter is one of the fast-
growing recruitment trends on the Internet.
Twitter now boasts more than 3 million users
worldwide and this number grows daily. More
employers are discovering the benefits of using
Twitter for real-time job listings and updates. Twitter
gives employers another tool to reach both active and
passive candidates, along with LinkedIn, Facebook,
and other social networks. And it's free!
Another popular use of Twitter is to post links to
white papers, articles, and other helpful information to
engage with the company's customers and potential
job candidates.
Some well-known U.S. and international companies
that are using Twitter include Abraxas, Accenture,
ADP, AT&T, Burger King, comScore, DaVita, Deloitte
Australia, Hershey's, Intel, KPMG, Mattel, Mayo Clinic,
Microsoft, MTV Networks, Raytheon, Thomson
Reuters, Warner Brothers, and Wipro.

College Graduate Employment: Results of the
Fall 2009 Salary Survey from the National Association
of Colleges and Employers released in September
found that college graduates faced one of the
toughest job markets in years. The types of jobs they
found changed little over the past 5 years, but teaching
rose to #1 in the rankings. Until 2008, management
trainee or sales held the top spot. This finding is
troubling said NACE's executive director because
public sector jobs generally pay less than do private
sector ones. Graduates were most likely to secure
positions as teachers, management trainees, or
financial / treasury analysts. Other top-paying jobs in
the survey were project engineer, software
designer/developer, public and private accountant,
sales rep, and consultant. The NACE's Job Outlook
2010 Fall Preview shows employers plan to hire 6.9%
fewer graduates in 2009-10 than they did in 2008-09.

Ten Promising Jobs for 2010: Starting
salaries for new hires in accounting, finance, IT, and
administrative/office support are likely to decline
marginally or remain flat in 2010 according to the
most recent Robert Half Salary Guides. In the
accounting and finance areas, the best job prospects
are for tax accountants, compliance directors, credit
managers, and senior financial analysts. In the IT
field, the best job prospects are for network
administrators (especially cloud computing, VoIP,
SaaS), information security managers, and systems
engineers. In administrative and office support, the
best job prospects are for medical records clerks,
customer service reps, and executive assistants.
Interestingly, despite high unemployment, many firms
say they have difficulty finding highly skilled
candidates for these positions.(See 10 Promising Jobs for
2010 for more details)
