ACU Participates in Release of Federal Action Plan on Asthma Disparities

ACU Executive Director Kathie Westpheling, center, speaking at a Washington, DC event on May 31 marking the release of the Coordinated Federal Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Asthma Disparities.  

The Coordinated Federal Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Asthma Disparities calls on action by the public and private sectors to:

  • Reduce barriers to asthma care to ensure that the populations most severely impacted by asthma receive evidence-based comprehensive care, which includes access to medical services, education and environmental interventions.
  • Build local capacity to enhance capacity to deliver integrated, community-based asthma care systems.
  • Target services to identify the children, families and communities most impacted by asthma disparities; and .
  • Accelerate prevention efforts to increase understanding of the cause or causes of asthma and test interventions that may prevent the onset of asthma. [Read more...] 

Health Care Reform Poll - Your Opinion Counts!

 

 

health reform ACU has launched a short poll to assess how organizations that provide health care to the underserved are preparing for implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Please take our poll.

 

We want to know how our community is preparing for Medicaid expansion and health insurance exchanges, which are scheduled to go into effect starting in 2014. You can access the poll here.

 

Your participation is voluntary, and will help us better understand our members' needs and provide support during this time of change. By sharing your input with us, you are eligible (optional) to enter into a drawing  to receive one of four $25 American Express gift cards. Call for Abstracts on Health IT and the Underserved  

  

ACU invites interested presenters to submit abstracts for workshops and posters for its first conference on Health IT for the Underserved to be held on March 7-8 at the 

Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel in Poughkeepsie, NY. Presentations are sought on health technology tools, workforce training, patient engagement, team-based technology, patient-centered medial homes and meaningful use, mobile technology, telehealth, and programs for special populations, such as migrant, homeless, or those living in public housing. Please submit your abstract online. The deadline for abstract submissions is September 1, 2012.

ObesityA new report from the Institute of Medicine confirms that obesity is more prevalent in low-income communities -  where most ACU members practice. The report, Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation, calls for coordinated action to achieve five goals:

Funding announced for patient-centered research 

     

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) issued a funding announcement for awards totally up to $96 million this year. Interested individuals must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) by Friday, June 15. Applications are due July 31. A webinar for interested applicants will be held on June 13, from 3:00-4:30 p.m. ET.
