Your opinion counts!
ACU plans to release an online opinion poll this month to better understand how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and expanded Medicaid eligibility will affect clinics and organizations that currently provide health care to the underserved. Will health care reform will stand? Will Medicaid expansions increase or decrease your patient population? What steps are you taking to prepare? These are some of the questions we are seeking answers to.
ACU's Advocacy Committee designed the poll and will use the results to determine how ACU can assist members during implementation of the Affordable Care Act (we are optimists). Through regular monthly calls, the ACU Advocacy Committee reviews current policy issues, recommends ACU positions, and engages members in advocating on issues relating to ACU's mission.
Watch your email and plan to share your views! Participants will be a eligible to win one of four $25 gift cards.

LGBT patients: the forgotten minority

Lea Mollon, a pharmacy student at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, wrote
The Forgotten Minorities: Health Disparities of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Communities which appeared in the February 2012 Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. Here, she describes what prompted her to write the column and the reaction she received to it. I thought it was important to highlight some of the disparities for other health care professionals or anyone who may work with this community. In telling my personal story, I hope to let other LGBT students and practitioners know that they aren't alone. It was hard at first knowing that I would be essentially coming out to the health care world. Fortunately, I have gone through the coming out process many times since I was 15 ... [Read more...]

Teledentistry program increased access
A teledentistry program resulted in a 300 percent increase among children of migrant farmworkers receiving treatment for decay, according to a recent report. Finger Lakes Community Health in NY implemented the program in which a dental hygienist would take a video of the child's teeth, apply fluoride varnish, and provide information regarding dental hygiene. The video was then sent to a pediatric dentist for review and to determine if a follow-up appointment was needed. According to the program coordinator, parents were more likely to travel to the follow-up appointment since they did not need to travel for the initial consultation.
