Asthma training - learn the latest!

If you are seeking continuing education credits for yourself or opportunities for staff development, consider scheduling an ACU professional training course. Our newest training program, Building an asthma care home: engaging clinicians, patients and caregivers in comprehensive asthma management, is available live or over the Internet. Tailored for providers to the underserved, it takes into account the language, culture and literacy barriers you face. Email Lois Wessel, CFNP to schedule a training.

You have a voice

Millions of people across the world are protesting because they want what you have - a say in how their government is run. But what good is a voice if you don't use it?

Congress has approved a Continuing Resolution that will keep the federal government operating through March 18th and cut $4 billion in federal spending. This action temporarily averts a government shutdown and allows negotiations on spending levels to continue between the House and Senate.

Please let your elected officials know how budget cuts to community health centers, the National Health Service Corps, and other programs for low income and underserved populations would affect the health of people in your state and congressional district. Please call the your U.S. Senators and Representative at the Capitol, (202) 224-3121. Please share any feedback you receive with us at acu@clinicians.org.

Is my water safe to drink?

Did you know that more than 23 million US households use well water as their source for drinking water? ACU has partnered with the Water Systems Council to produce information sheets for healthcare providers on safe drinking water in communities that rely on well water. Providers in these rural areas will benefit from learning how to educate their patients about the safety of well water and how to maintain wells to promote healthy drinking water. The six easy-to-read fact sheets in the series are:

Drinking Water & Children's Health (general info)

Water & Individuals with Compromised Immune Systems or the Elderly

Drinking Water & Pregnancy

Fluoride in Drinking Water

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Water

Testing Drinking Water

The fact sheets are free to download from the ACU website. The Water Systems Council (WSC) is the only national, nonprofit organization solely focused on household wells and small water well systems. WSC is committed to ensuring that Americans who get their water from household, private wells have safe, reliable drinking water and to protecting our nation's groundwater resources.

ACU celebrates its 15th anniversary this year - we were founded in 1996 by former members of the National Health Service Corps. Many of our Charter members are still leading the way in expanding health care options for the underserved. As an example, view this video clip of ACU Charter Member Dr. Gary Wiltz speaking out about community health centers on C-SPAN's Washington Journal program. Are you an ACU Charter member? If so, tell us where you are and what you doing these days. We'd like to hear from as many Charter members as possible. Send an email to acu@clinicians.org.

Affordable Care Act - First Anniversary

How has the Affordable Care Act benefited you and your patients? March 23 marks the one year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. In its first year, the law has provided greater access to preventive health care services, allowed young adults up to age 26 to stay on their parents' health insurance plans and prevented insurance companies from denying kids access to insurance coverage because of a preexisting condition. Have you or someone you know benefitted? Send your stories to acu@clinicians.org.
