Starting Insulin: A Patient Guide

ACU and the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation released of the first of 10 educational handouts for patients who are starting insulin. This upcoming series, in both English and Spanish, will be designed in two formats: low literacy and very low literacy. The first handout in the series, "Using Insulin to treat your Diabetes: What it means for you," is now available to download here.
 

Clinical Resources
 
The Effective Health Care Program, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), helps clinicians get access to evidence-based findings on the effectiveness and risks of options for numerous health conditions - from diabetes to cancer to cardiac conditions. This initiative supports a growing portfolio of patient-centered outcomes research known as comparative effectiveness research.
 
Clinicians are particularly encouraged to access the Effective Health Care Program's clinician guides, which summarize the bottom-line findings from research reviews. Each guide includes a confidence scale that indicates the strength of evidence for key findings. As examples, here are links to two guides:

Healthcare Career Network Scholarships

Applicants must be enrolled as full- and part-time students in an undergraduate or graduate health care program at an accredited college or university OR professionals pursuing health care continuing education and certifications.

3 Georgetown University Family Medicine Fellowships These fellowships are for Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Physicians who have completed family medicine residency and are committed to advocating and caring for the underserved. Fellows benefit from comprehensive mentoring and significant growth opportunities in faculty development, patient care, administration, leadership, research and networking. Fellows also do regular clinical work in community health centers, 4-6 weeks of inpatient attending, and precept residents; competitive salary and benefits. See the ACU website for more information. Oct. 12, An introductory Web conference on AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program: Integrating Comparative Effectiveness Research into Everyday Practice, 2 - 3 p.m. (ET). 

Nov. 18 - 20, the 20th Annual Midwest Stream Farmworker Health Forum in Austin, Texas. Registration is now open; the early bird registration fee is available until Oct. 22.

Nov. 30, Understanding What Works in Improving Health Literacy, a workshop sponsored by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy and the J&J Health Care Institute at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles, Calif. The workshop will cover the clinical impact of health literacy improvements, economic outcomes of health literacy implementations, and how stakeholders can affect health literacy.

Mobile Medical Apps
