ACU has more than $10,000 available to support members who wish to attend the National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care, Dec. 5-8, in Orlando. Read what two ACU members from Community Health Partners, Livingston, MT, who have attended previous IHI national forums said about their experience:
"As a learning and improving organization, we find ourselves ahead of some curves, but to be surrounded by the best brains in the business truly is inspiring. We look forward to returning to IHI so that we can benchmark existing progress and learn what is coming around the corner." - Lander Cooney
"I feel like IHI conferences (particularly the National Forum) expose me to ideas AND include training in implementing those ideas, so when I return, I can take action. I can think of quite a few tangible results from IHI exposure." - Buck Taylor

Medical-Legal Partnerships
Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) are now available at over 180 hospitals and health centers across 38 states according to a new study from the Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. The authors estimate that between 50 and 85 percent of health center users - or 10 to 17 million people - experience unmet legal needs, many of which negatively impact their health.
For practical advice on how to use medical-legal partnerships in managing home housing issues for patients with asthma, see Upcoming Webinars, in this issue. |

Behavioral Health Parity in HIT
A new bill in Congress would expand federal health information technology (HIT) payments to previously ineligible community behavioral health providers and organizations. H.R. 5040, the Health Information Technology Extension for Behavioral Health Services Act of 2010, ensures that behavioral and mental health professionals, psychiatric hospitals and behavioral, mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities will be eligible for the electronic health record incentive payments established under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. ACU encourages members to contact your Representative to request support for this important bill. |
Reducing Medication Risks ACU weighed
in on the Food and Drug Administration's Safe Use Initiative recently when Joshua
Sharfstein, Principal Deputy Commissioner of the FDA, presented the initiative
to the Institute of Medicine's Health Literacy Roundtable. The goal of the initiative
is to create public and private collaborations among groups to identify specific,
preventable medication risks and develop, implement and evaluate cross-sector
interventions to reduce the preventable harm from these risks. ACU representative
Sharon Barrett encouraged Dr. Sharfstein to examine interventions that are
population- and language-specific and take in consideration low literacy levels. She also articulated the need for inclusion of safety net
clinicians as key stakeholders in implementing the initiative. If you are
interested in participating in an ACU coalition to address over-the-counter and
prescription drug safety and labeling, please contact Sharon Barrett.
