Health Reform - Final Push

Here are 5 immediate consumer benefits from health care reform, from Health Care for American NOW!:
  1. Stops insurance companies from denying care based on "pre-existing conditions."
  2. Prevents insurance companies from rescission and putting lifetime limits on dollar value of benefits
  3. Expands coverage and care for uninsured people and those with insurance
  4. Reduces prescription drug costs for seniors
  5. Saves money for small businesses who offer insurance to workers

How will your community benefit? The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released a district-by-district report on the impact of health care reform. To see a detailed report on your community, click on this link and then select your congressional district.

Health reform is near the finish line; please contact your elected officials (House and Senate) to share your thoughts.

ACU Asthma Training Gets Boost

A new report on childhood asthma reaffirms ACU's approach to asthma care and education, in particular the focus on reducing indoor asthma triggers. The ACU curriculum, Realistic Measures for the Reduction of Indoor Asthma Triggers, is offered in English or Spanish for primary care providers and community health workers. If you or your organization is interested in hosting a training session, please contact Lois Wessel, CNFP for more information.

The report, Changing pO2licy: The Elements for Improving Childhood Asthma Outcomes, cites the increasing prevalence of asthma among children and recommends strategies for improving childhood asthma outcomes. It was developed by researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

ACU and Partnership for Medicaid Comment on 'Meaningful Use'

ACU, in conjunction with the Partnership for Medicaid, recently submitted a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on the incentive program for electronic health record systems. The letter urges CMS to simplify the "meaningful use" criteria so that more Medicaid providers and hospitals will be eligible for incentives. Please access the letter here.

Family Doc Takes Aim at Obesity among Navajo Teens

In February, we asked Clinician & Community readers to tell us what you are doing to tackle the problem of childhood obesity. Here, Charmaine Chan, DO, who works at an IHS site and at a school-based health center in Shiprock, NM, reports on what they are doing.

"We started a Wellness Group with Navajo adolescents, based on the theories about chronic disease management support groups. Most of the kids in the group have been seen for pregnancy or hypertension or they are obese. We asked the students for wellness topics they would like to discuss and activities that they would like to do that they have never done before. Continue reading..
