For Patients with Diabetes, Self-Care Is Key

One in six individuals with diabetes has avoided or delayed care because of cost according to a new report. Are these your patients? ACU's diabetes patient education series, created in partnership with Home Diagnostics, now includes eight handouts designed to reinforce key messages about living with diabetes. All are available in English and Spanish and are geared to low literacy audiences. Download them from the ACU Web site or use the order form to request tear pads of 25 sheets.
 

Test and Treat in One Visit

Point-of-care testing, in which clinicians perform routine clinical tests during a patient visit and receive immediate results, offers a number of advantages for patients and clinicians. To increase awareness about point-of-care lipid testing, ACU has partnered with CardioChek PA to make available an educational webinar conducted by ACU members. ACU members can also try the technology and obtain supplies at a reduced cost. More


Health Reform: If You Like It, Let Them Know

The House of Representatives voted on Nov. 7 to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill. See how your representative voted, and use the online feedback form to say "Thanks" or "No thanks" for their vote. Learn what the House bill, H.R. 3962, says about health disparities.


ACU Members in the News

ACU founding member Dr. Regina Benjamin was confirmed by the Senate as the next Surgeon General of the United States. A family physician, Dr. Benjamin is the founder of Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Bayou La Batre, Ala.

Urban Health Plan, Inc., a federally qualified community health center based in the South Bronx, was awarded the 2009 HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence for Community Health during National Health IT Week. More

New Resources

Health Literacy is the focus of the Nov. 11 ARHQ Health Care Innovations Exchange Web site. The featured Innovations describe different approaches health professionals used in community-based settings to improve health literacy. The featured QualityTools provide several resources to assess patient's health literacy and address patients with low health literacy.

The RxAssist Learning Center has the latest updates on patient assistance programs. Also available is a Medicare Part D/PAP eligibility chart. 


NHSC Streamlines Application for Loan Repayment

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has made applying for load repayment easier than ever. The new application process reduces the number of documents required by half, uses fillable forms and includes step-by-step instructions and a checklist. Applications will be accepted through July 29, 2010; applicants are encouraged to apply early.



Fellowship Opportunities

The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship is a one-year fellowship tailored for rising 3rd- and 4th-year medical students, designed to increase the pool of physicians with a population health perspective. More

The HIV Medical Association is accepting applications for its minority clinical fellowship program which seeks to increase the number of African American and Latino physicians with the expertise to provide clinical care to patients with HIV in the communities most affected by HIV disease. More


Calls for Speakers, Abstracts, Exhibitors

The National Center for Health in Public Housing is accepting abstracts for the Health Care for Residents of Public Housing national conference in Boston on June 28-30, 2010. Abstracts should address strategies and programs to increase access to health care, eliminate health disparities, and enhance health care delivery. ACU is a partner in helping to build the capacity of clinicians to meet the unique and challenging health needs of public housing residents.

An international Medical Volunteerism Conference at Emory University is calling for speakers and exhibitors for April 16-18, 2010.
