Welcome to Fulford Academy's first quarterly e-Letter, which is being sent to all Fulford Academy's friends, current and past families, international educational advisors, and schools, which we worked with in the past.
Our quarterly e-Letter will focus on our upcoming programs and stories from Fulford's Alumni, providing you with a glimpse of what Fulford Academy has to offer.
In this issue, we would like to remind everyone interested to register for our Summer Academic Orientation Program soon as the program is almost full.
Registration for Fall term 2008 has already began and we look forward to receiving applications from great students this year! |
"My time at Fulford Academy has given me the skills and the knowledge to start a highly successful year at Appleby College. [Fulford] is my second home away from home and I am still in contact with the friends I made during my stay in Brockville!"

Summer Academic Orientation Program |
The Summer Academic Orientation Program is an opportunity for students who have already received a "Letter of Acceptance" to experience a boarding school program. The majority of our students attending this intensive English immersion program have already been accepted into a boarding school for September. Therefore, their English skills have met the minimum requirements for those particular boarding schools, but the schools and parents strongly feel that additional preparation would benefit the students with their transition into boarding school for September.
Students attending our Summer Academic Orientation Program already have met the academic requirements of a regular boarding school and are attending our program to help with the transition both linguistically and culturally for September such that they will have the confidence to succeed in an English first language environment.
Attending Fulford Academy will increase students' English Language skills and will provide them with a venue to become oriented to both North American culture and academic curriculum in a boarding school environment. This is a very demanding English immersion program and students attending a traditional boarding school are advised to attend both the July and August programs.
Students attending the August portion of the Summer Academic Orientation Program will attend a mandatory four day "Leadership Camp", which again, gives students that "camp" experience before attending a similar program offered at most boarding schools in September with the focus on bonding students to their new schools, classmates and roommates.
Many boarding schools will highly recommend or make an offer conditional upon students attending our Summer Academic Orientation Program. Some of these students are students who are going into Grades 9 to 12.
As with the ESL Prep Program, the Summer Academic Orientation Program focuses on teaching English through Canadian core content subjects of math/science, history/geography, English Literature, Study Skills and sports, therefore developing student's skills in classroom vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, pronunciation, writing and listening skills. Teaching English through core content subjects allows students to gain the confidence required as they are familiar with the English content of these subjects as they enter their new classrooms in September.
Fulford Academy's venue (a beautiful 16th Century Surry Style Manor) truly mirrors that of a traditional English style boarding school. Our school is small by design and purpose to focus on the individual needs of our students. With a 50 student capacity, our maximum classroom size is only 10 students. When a student arrives for the Summer Academic Orientation Program, they will be placed in a class according to language ability which is determined by an entrance test, as well as by age and grade appropriateness. With all of our teachers, residential staff and administrative staff we can provide an English only environment to support a strong foundation in English such that students will be prepared to succeed in their boarding schools in September. |

Fulford Academy also offers: |
ESL Prep (Fall, Winter, Spring Terms) which is the focus of our school, prepares students both linguistically and culturally for the challenges of prestigious boarding schools. We can accomodate rolling admissions into this program such that students can "parachute" into this program anytime during the year.
High School Program is for students who have completed the ESL Prep program; however, still require English as a Second Language support in a small classroom environment to complete Ministry of Education in Ontario credits towards a high school diploma. Class size is between 5 to 7 and concentrates on the students' individual needs.
High School Support Program is for students who have a strong enough English to cope in an English first language environment, but still need the additional support and structure offered by a boarding school environment. This program is often referred to as the Home Stay Plus Program, where, partnering with the local school board, we can offer the best of both worlds, Canadian friends from their public school program and their international friends from their boarding program. |

Stories from Fulford's Alumni |
"Earlier this year there was an English competition for all students of Tatarstan, one of the republics of Russia. Frankly speaking, I could feel the emulative spirit around and see that everyone desired to won the main award. I tried my best and got second place. I believe that happened because of Fulford Academy. I have been coming there every year for summer time since 2005. Fulford Academy is not just a simple school where they teach you how to write, read and speak English fluently, but also it is the place where you can meet the wonderful people from the entire world. I've made lots of friends and we still keep in touch with each other. I would like to say that the atmosphere there makes you feel more confident about your skills, so you are not afraid to communicate and polish your English. Besides, Fulford Academy helped me and my sister to get to know Appleby College and to be accepted to it for the next academic year. My family and I are really thankful to Fulford Academy and its staff, teachers for giving an opportunity to learn your language and to spend such a wonderful time in Canada."
