Your Weekly Update from Grassroots Grantmakers

Question of the Week
If it was up to you to create an award for excellence in grassroots grantmaking, what would be the ONE quality that you would be your "non-negotiatble" on the list of criteria for the award?
Send us a quick email to tell us what you think is the most important contributor to excellence in the practice of grassroots grantmaking. |
Meet Julie Tindall Working through a city government lensJulie Tindall, Community Outreach Coordinator for the City of Orlando's Office of Neighborhood and Community Affairs, staffs the Mayor's Matching Grants Program for Neighborhoods.
Julie talked with us recently about the matching grants program - grassroots grantmaking through a city government lens.
Check out what she had to say about the program and what she is learning about managing a city-sponsored grants program.

Ongoing Detective Work Help us out in our questWe are currently searching for two types of organizations that are now under-represented in our grassroots grantmaking network:
Local intermediaries who provide technical assistance, training, information, coaching, and possibly grants to neighborhood groups and other types of community associations in their communities.
City governments who are managing small grants programs for neighborhood groups in their communities.
Have you spotted one of these? Give us a tip - we'll follow up on your lead! |
Fundamental Shifts Check out our new tool
Jim Diers, former Director of the Seattle's Office of Neighborhoods and author of the highly regarded Neighborhood Power: Building Community the Seattle Way, talks about necessary shifts that local governments and neighborhood groups must make to be effective partners.
Grassroots Grantmakers has adapted and summarized Jim's insights on "necessary shifts" in a chart that now appears in the "tools" section of Grassroots Grantmakers' website.
Check it out. Let us know if this resonates with you or sparks some thinking about shifts in your world. |
Are You a Member? What does this mean to us?
Grassroots Grantmakers is a peer learning network and community of practice, open to all funders and partner organizations (broadly defined) who are working from a "we begin with residents" perspective - supporting resident-initiated and resident-led work that builds civic capacity and contributes to community resilience.
We work from an open-source orientation, making information available to all without regard to official membership status. We depend on members, however, to support the on-going work of our network and to work with us as key partners to build the field of grassroots grantmaking and expand our community of practice.
Not sure if you're a contributing member? Click here to find out. And if you're not there, please consider joining us. This is the time for grassroots grantmaking.
