QuestionNeighborhood Resource Centers?
Who They Are/Why We Care

Our upcoming topical call focuses on neighborhood resource centers - local intermediaries who are work "in the gap" between community and institutions.

We've seen the high value that neighborhood resources can bring to the grassroots grantmaking landscape - and we've also seen the unique set of challenges that such centers face.

In the interest of facilitating joint action and information flow that will lead to more effective practice, over the past year we have been hosting a learning circle that includes leaders of six neighborhood resource centers.

ABCD InstituteBattle Creek's Doug Woodard on Social Entrepreneurs
Taking the Next Step

Doug Woodard was a small business owner for twenty years and now serves as Project Advisor for the Battle Creek Community Foundation's new pilot program, the Neighborhood Venture Investment Program.

Doug says that starting a non-profit might be more challenging than starting a small business - and is wondering what models beside the traditional non-profit framework might be crafted for community based groups and social entrepreneurs who want to build on the projects that they launched with small grants from BCCF's Yes We Can! Neighborhood Grantmaking Program.

Read about this new pilot program and what Doug has to say about next steps for social entrepreneurs.

Read what Janis has to say about what distinguishes small grants for grassroots grantmaking from other small grants programs.  Add your thoughts to the list of distinguishing characteristics that she began by posting a comment.

Possibilities & Assumptions:  What's Next After a Small Grant?

In another post, Janis talked about the question that the Battle Creek Community Foundation is exploring with their Neighborhood Ventures Investment Program - what's next after a small grant?
