Your Weekly Update from
Grassroots Grantmakers

May 6, 2009
Question of the Week
When talking with someone about a grant, what question do you ask to signal that you're a funder who is working from a "we begin with residents" perspective?

Help us build a list of powerful questions that facilitate effective grassroots grantmaking.  Email us with your favorite question.

Big Thinking This Week
Are We Asking the Wrong Question?

This week Janis shared her perspective on a common thread that she has observed in conversations among funders in these challenging economic times - and wondered if a focus on nonprofit organizations is the right focus if community resilience is the goal.

Check out what Janis had to say and post a comment to share your perspective.

Julie Black on Neighbourliness
A Canadian colleague's reflections on the importance of belonging

Julie Black, Citizen Engagement Associate at The Calgary Foundation, manages two grantmaking programs that are designed to promote belonging and neighbourliness in Calgary, a city that is relatively young and has experienced rapid growth.

Read what Julie has to say about what she has learned about the power of neighbourliness and the importance of funding that is designed to promote belonging.
Hot Link of the Week

Peter Block's 5 Questions
Last Week's Question of the Week

Peter Block, author of Community: The Structure of Belonging and special guest on last month's topical conference call, says he can tell that a funder is not that interested in seeing things change in a community by the questions they ask.

Click here to see the list of Peter's 5 "tip-off" questions.

Last week we asked you to guess what questions would be on Peter's list.  Congratulations to Mary Migliorelli, The Fieldstone Foundation's Program Officer in Utah, for submitting the 5 questions that were the closest match with Peter's list.  She wins a copy of Peter's book!
