INSIDE SCOOP ON THE BEST IN MT WASHINGTON VALLEY

Top Ten Locally "Grown" Favorites
A guide to local flavor

Mt Washington Valley abounds with fabulous foods, locally made products and a treasure trove for locavores.  Read on for our ten top suggestions for local flavor.

Sherman Farm: Open year round selling a wide array of farm raised produce, organic meats and pre-made dinners and desserts, here's a "must stop" on your way to Fryeburg.   Visitors look forward to the "Cut Your Own Flowers"  available from late July through frost in September. Customers are equipped with scissors and a bucket of water and can cut as many or as few as they want. Located on East Conway Road, six miles from Rt. 302 in Redstone.

Weston's Farm: A seven generation family farm located in the foothills of western Maine, look for two retail markets here featuring many locally made crafts plus fresh snap peas, regular pod peas, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, organic and pesticide free lettuce, basil, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, salad greens, baby spinach along with maple syrup and home-baked goods. You'll find Weston's farmstands in Fryeburg and on the West Side Road in Conway.

Chef's Market: Here's a unique specialty food market and delicatessen offering a selection of fully prepared gourmet dishes, hearty sandwiches, homemade soups and made-to-order salads right in the heart of North Conway Village.  Everything from the kitchen is completely homemade using only the freshest of ingredients.

1785 Inn: Honored by the Gourmet Diners Society, with the  "Golden Fork Award" 1996 through 2007 and Best of NH 2008 Award, this inn and restaurant uses ingredients from their extensive gardens throughout the spring, summer and fall growing season. The wine list has been called "One of the finest in the world" by Wine Spectator magazine for twenty-two consecutive years. The Inn is two miles north of the center of North Conway Village next to the Intervale Scenic Vista Overlook.

Fields on the Saco: August 29, 2009 1:30 PM to 8:30 PM - Take two neighboring New Hampshire and Maine farms and combine them with four award-winning chefs and Mt Washington Valley's green team, and what results is a fabulous four course meal and event held in the fields of Weston's Farm on the Saco River. On this night alone everything that touches your taste buds will have been raised in the fertile ground of two bordering family farms in Maine and New Hampshire. Four amazing chefs combine their talents to utilize the bounty from local farms along with specialty liquors, wines and foods to offer a truly unforgettable meal, served in the fields under tents. Tickets may be ordered by mail or over the phone. More information here.

Oxford House: The focus here is on fresh, local ingredients artfully presented with warm, genuine hospitality. Innovative cuisine is prepared by Culinary Institute of America graduate Chef-Owner Jonathan Spak. Downeast Magazine says: "No matter where you stay, dinner should be back at The Oxford House Inn where chef-owner Jonathan Spak has earned a well-deserved reputation for inventive dishes." The Oxford House is just a short drive from North Conway on Rt 302 in Fryeburg, Maine.

Zeb's General Store: Zeb's features New England-made products in an atmosphere that recreates the look and feel of an early 1900's general store.  Zeb's has the largest selection of New England specialty foods in the country, and every single product in the store is New England made.
The penny candy counter is over 67 feet long. The Coca Cola company wanted to purchase the authentic soda fountain at the back of the store, but Zeb's owners hung onto it to add to the character here. The store sells New England  books, toys, puzzles, pottery, personal care products, a wonderful selection of gourmet cheeses and much more. Zeb's is located in the middle of North Conway Village, look for the visitors taking pictures with the life-sized bear.
