Top Ten List
INSIDE SCOOP ON THE BEST IN MT WASHINGTON VALLEY

Top Ten Places for Family Foto Fun

The Summit of Mt Washington: Encounter ever-changing weather, panoramic views and four climate zones as you journey to the highest point in the Northeast. You can hike one of the many trails to the summit, take the world's first mountain-climbing Cog Railway, take a guided tour, or drive yourself up the Mt Washington Auto Road. Take your photo at the marker at the peak.

Scenic Overlooks: Cathedral Ledge is one of the area's most distinctive landmarks. The top of the 1150 high ledge offers an unparalleled vantage point to view the valley below and makes breathtaking backdrop for a family photo. It's an easy drive from North Conway too.  Directions: From the light just beyond the Eastern Slope Inn on Rt. 16 in North Conway Village, go left onto River Road. The Cathedral Ledge Road is 1.4 miles along on the left. This 1.7 mile drive to the top ends in a circular turn. Park and walk over to see the view.

The Scenic Vista in North Conway offers a beautiful view of Mount Washington and picture taking opportunity. A state-operated information center is located right there too. Directions: Continue north on White Mountain Hwy (Rte. 16) from North Conway Village about 3 miles.

Diana's Bath: Don't miss this. 200 yards of granite terraces, cascading falls, waterspouts and granite basins along Lucy Brook. It's a wonderful place to cool off, explore and of course take pictures. It's an easy half mile walk on a smooth, shady, gravel path. Find it one half mile from the turnoff to Cathedral Ledge on West Side Rd. Expect company in the peak summer months.

Visit the Notches: Pinkham Notch (on Route 16, past Jackson), Crawford Notch (on Route 302, past Bartlett) and  Evans Notch (Route 113 from East Conway) offer scenic glory and ideal picture taking opportunities. Look for fabulous views of Mt Washington, gorgeous flowing waterfalls and rock formations. The Basin in Evan's Notch is a beautiful place for a picnic.

Bamboo Shoots at Story Land: Take the family for a big splash on this log ride up and down the shoots.  Smile for the Story Land camera and take home a great souvenir (extra fee). Enjoy 21 themed rides, three lively shows, countless unique play areas and more. Open weekends from Memorial Day Weekend through Father's Day; every day from Father's Day to Labor Day; and weekends from Labor Day to Columbus Day. Click here for more info.

The Skyway Sleigh at Santa's Village: Here's another opportunity to take home a picture of the family. This sleigh monorail guides you over and around Santa's Village. Smile for the camera and pick up your photo at the end of the ride (extra fee). Experience a day filled with themed rides, great shows, and Santa and his reindeer. Santa's Village is open from Memorial Day weekend through the summer and over the holidays too. More info here.

Scenic Sky Ride at Attitash: Take a round-trip, one hour tour to the summit of Attitash, climbing over 1,700 vertical feet to Attitash's 2,350' summit. Once at the top, take your camera and climb the White Mountain Observation Tower to enjoy 360-degree views of the Presidential Range and the Mt Washington Valley. Attitash also offers mountain biking, an Alpine slide, water slides, climbing wall and EuroBungy trampoline. Opens June 13, 2009. Click here for more info.

Wildcat Gondola Express: The Wildcat summit reaches 4062 feet and boasts panoramic views of the Presidential Mountain Range, Tuckerman's Ravine, Huntington Ravine, and Mt Washington. Cameras are a must. The Wildcat Gondola uses a high speed quad chairlift so you can get to the top in no time. It's an enclosed gondola and seats four people. You can bring lunch and have a picnic with your family. Wildcat is open weekends from Memorial Day through mid-June, then daily through mid-October. More information here.

Arts Jubilee: Since 1983, Arts Jubilee has been bringing exciting, world-class musical entertainment to the residents and visitors of Mt Washington Valley. Outdoor festival concerts are at the base of Mount Cranmore's North Slope and are designed for enjoyment by the entire family. This year, the schedule features Livingston Taylor, the annual Symphony Pops Concert Under the Stars followed by spectacular fireworks, and a Big Band and Jazz concert. Bring a blanket or chairs and your camera! $5 donation at the gate suggested. Click here for more info.

Swings, Fire Engines, Trains and Ice Cream: Right in the middle of North Conway Village you'll find a tremendous combination of foto fun. A public playground that includes a water fountain play area is right next to the North Conway Fire Department where the fire trucks are clean, shiny and photogenic - and as every parent knows, a kid favorite. Next door is the Conway Scenic Railroad and the historic train station. Wait, there's more, next to the train station is Ben and Jerry's scoop shop, an oasis for ice cream euphoria.
