Welcome to one of the wilder
winters Mt. Washington
Valley has seen in a long time. Temperatures have
fluctuated by 50-degrees some weeks, yet the
snowmakers and the groomers at the Valley’s seven
ski resorts and six XC Centers (yes, some do have
snowmaking, and those who don’t have been trucking
it in!) have done a tremendous job maintaining
excellent skiing conditions. Hats off to the Mountain
Operations teams at all of the Valley’s ski resorts and
XC Centers. They’ve done a yeoman’s job this year.
Speaking of great skiing, March is traditionally the
best month of the year for skiing. Spring snow,
warmer days and plenty of fabulous events make this
month the perfect one for a skiing getaway. Don’t
forget about the midweek pass offered at more than
fifty-five lodging properties; it allows you the choice
of skiing any of Mt. Washington Valley’s thirteen ski
resorts and XC Centers midweek, combined with an
overnight stay. Simply go to
Snow Much Fun for more information.

 Snow Sculpture in
Jackson
Visit Jackson Village, March 3-5 and you’ll see
fabulous snow sculptures under construction as the
5th annual New Hampshire State Sanctioned Snow
Sculpting Competition and Invitational gets
underway. These dates were rescheduled due to
limited snow conditions and should the extended
dates be met with out the snow... the snow
cylinders will be converted into ice blocks and invite
you to attend the very first NH Sanctioned Ice
Carving Competition thanks to the local Valley Ice
Company. Although both amateur and professional
participating snow sculptors are all more familiar with
snow sculpting they have the talent and skill to
carve ice. Each team of sculptors consists of 2 or 3
members, and in order to be eligible to compete in
the State Championship, team members must be 18
years or older and reside or work in New Hampshire.
The winning team of the State Championship will
receive a trophy and an invitation to compete in the
United States National Snow Sculpting Competition,
to be held at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 2007.
National winners then go on to compete in
international competitions. Amateurs and
professionals of any age are eligible to compete in
the Overall and People's Choice Awards. Team
members come from a variety of backgrounds
including chefs from fine restaurants, architects,
students of culinary and art schools, and various
civic organizations. Sculptors from outside of New
Hampshire will also be in Jackson participating in the
invitational, exhibiting their magnificent works of
snow art.
Other activities planned for this event weekend
include a welcome reception dinner and torch light
parade on Saturday night at Black Mountain, the
Snow Ball Express Sleigh Rides Saturday around
Jackson Village and the Winter Wildquack Duck Race
on Sunday at Black Mountain. For more information
on this event, contact the Jackson Area Chamber at
(603) 383-9356 or at Jackson Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Red Parka Regatta

Attitash on March 29 for this annual zany on-snow
regatta. Individuals, families or teams make their way
down the Learning Center slope any way they can.
Participants use canoes, kayaks, couches or
anything else from which they can make a “boat” to
get down in the best time. Costumes are encouraged
and silliness is required. It’s fun for the whole family!
Visit Attitash
for more information.
 King
Pine Cardboard Box
Derby
And for those who love silliness on the mountains,
bring your best cardboard box to King Pine on March
26th. Build a cardboard box racer (for two or four
racers) with your own theme, bring your own theme
music and race down our special race course. Prizes
will be awarded for appearance, speed and
durability. It’s the perfect family-of-four project.

Snow People on Parade
Announcing the Mt. Washington Valley’s first Street
Art Project: Snow People! In the tradition of apples,
cows and horses, which have appeared in cities
throughout the country, Mt. Washington Valley’s
Snow People are friendly, frosty individually painted
and decorated snowmen, appearing from Conway to
Jackson. The artistic creations involve both
organizations and businesses who have commissioned
the art and the various artists in the area who have
put their designs on the 3-dimensional 6-foot tall and
6-foot in diameter ‘canvas’! "We anticipate making
this an annual affair starting with several snowmen
this year and working our way up to a sizeable
exhibit over the next few years," said Dot Seybold,
General Manager of OVP Management, Inc. and
Marketing Director of Settlers' Green. As the main
sponsor of the event, Settlers’ Green funded the
process of creating the unique and one-of-a-kind
fiberglass mold which was used to produce the all-
white characters, ready for final design. The project
is intended to be a display of one of a kind pieces of
street art which will be on display through out the
winter season. The original goal for the 2006 winter
season was to have a dozen artistically designed and
painted snow people on display in the Valley. As a
result of the enthusiasm generated by the first
announcement of the project, a total of seventeen
Snow People are now available for viewing.
Visitors and residents are invited to ‘take the tour’ of
Snow People on Parade using the locator map found
on the web at Snow People - click on "a map of
locations". There is a People’s Choice ballot at the
bottom of the map and it is hoped that people will
vote for their three favorites. Complete ballots may
be dropped off at the MWV Chamber Information
Booth where additional maps are available, or mailed
to: Snow People On Parade, PO Box 677, North
Conway, NH 03860 by March 3rd. For more
information on the Snow People, visit Mt.
Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, scroll
down and click on the Snow Person photo.
