Summer has officially come to Mt. Washington
Valley. As schools have closed, the attractions have
opened daily for the summer, and the black flies are
beginning to retreat. This is a wonderful time to visit
Mt. Washington Valley as businesses roll out the red,
white and blue carpet for families and those seeking
an escape to the mountains.
With plenty of rain throughout June, the waterfalls
are still flowing. Take a scenic waterfall tour, or grab
the kids and head to Attitash for splashing among
the pools and waterslides. Whether it's natural or
man made, you'll find the perfect way to cool off as
water slides down your back in Mt. Washington
Valley.

"Summer Seminars on the Summit,"
Atop
Mount Washington
Looking for an unusual way to spend a summer
night? Want to visit a world apart from the routine,
but still not too far from home? The Mt. Washington
Observatory's "Summer Seminars on the Summit"
program offers learning, fun, and a sense of
adventure to its participants, offering an opportunity
to learn in a location unlike any other in New
England. Seminar participants spend a night at the
Observatory's weather station atop
Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet the highest peak in
the Northeast. The seminars include informational
sessions about the mountain's weather, history, and
environment.
Only five participants take part in each Seminar, says
Crane, "This small group size makes the Summer
Seminar perfect for groups of colleagues, friends, or
families. We especially encourage teachers to take
part in the Summer Seminar experience, since it can
add some hands-on learning in weather and related
subjects which a teacher can go on to share with his
or her students."
The program aims to educate participants about the
Mount Washington environment and the human
experience of the mountain. Weather, of course,
receives special attention, since it is always an
important topic on Mount Washington. The
Observatory has monitored the elements year-round
on the summit since 1932, and Observatory staff
clocked the highest wind speed ever recorded on
earth, a remarkable 231 miles per hour, in 1934. To
give Summer Seminar participants a good grasp of
the mountain's weather, the programs include an in-
depth tour of the weather station and discussions on
life and
work at the Observatory.
The 2005 season of Summer Seminars atop Mount
Washington offers programs on
weekends and on weekdays, on the dates of July 2-
3, July 7-8, July 16-17, July 25-26, July 30-31,
August 6-7, August 11-12, August 18-19, August 27-
28, and September 1-2.
The Mount Washington Observatory, a private, non-
profit, membership-supported organization, invites
interested individuals to call for more information
about the Summer Seminar program (including space
availability and fee information) at (800) 706-0432,
ext. 203 and online at
www.mountwashington.org .

|
The "Road to the Links" heads straight to the White
Mountains of New Hampshire! From scenic and
challenging 9-hole family courses to 18-hole
championship venues, you'll find much more than
great golf!
Some say golf is "just a game." True, but ask
anyone who plays and they'll use words
like "passion", "addiction" and "lifestyle." It's all of
that and more ... as you'll see at each of the courses
found on the "Road to the Links."
Every course you play is distinctly "one of a kind",
offering a true test of golf skills at every level. And,
given our location in the magnificent White Mountains
of New Hampshire, the biggest challenge just may be
keeping your eye on the ball when surrounded by
some of the most beautiful scenery in the world!

Free Admission to Mount Washington's
Weather Discovery Center
Admission to the Mount Washington Observatory's
Weather Discovery Center in North Conway Village is
now free to all visitors.
"Come one, come all," is the invitation Executive
Director Will Abbott has extended to all residents and
visitors. "The Weather Discovery Center opened in a
new location last summer, just across the street from
the Eastern Slope Inn," Abbott said. "It is a
community resource and we're inviting businesses in
the community to team up with us to make the
Center more accessible to more people," he added.
Free admission to the Weather Discovery Center for
the months of June, July and August will be
sponsored by Independent Restaurants of the Mount
Washington Valley.
The Weather Discovery Center offers hands-on
exhibits explaining the natural systems that create
the Earth's weather and climate. The Center tells the
story of the "world's worst weather" through the
experiences of the Observers who have worked at
the Observatory's summit weather station since
1932. It offers a short video program in its theater
on a regular schedule. Two times each day -- at
11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. -- the Center broadcasts
a live, interactive program from the summit called
Live from the Rockpile. Hosted by a summit weather
Observer, Live from the Rockpile takes visitors on a
real time tour of the summit facility and current
weather conditions, as well as providing a question
and answer opportunity.
For more information on sponsorship of free admission
to the Weather Discovery Center contact the
Observatory's Director of Operations Magie Driscoll at
356-2137 ext. 223 or mdriscoll@mountwashington.org.
