 Summer Internshops on
Mount
Washington
Ever dream of spending a summer on Mount
Washington? Have you ever fantasized about
spending a whole season atop the highest peak in
the Northeast? Does living and working in the one of
the most fascinating locations in New England appeal
to you? If so, the Mount Washington Observatory
has a program that may be just right for you. The
private, non-profit Observatory, which has
maintained the summit weather station since 1932,
and which has operated the summit's Museum since
1973, has announced its 2005 internship program.
Participants in the summer-long program live and
work shoulder to shoulder with the Observatory staff,
sharing the many responsibilities inherent in operating
and maintaining the weather station and Museum.
The internships run from mid-May to early
September. Interns normally sign on for the entire
period, working the same week-on, week-off
schedule as the regular Observatory staff. Room and
board at the summit during the "on" weeks is
provided. Though interns serve as volunteers with
respect to their work at the Observatory, they do
receive stipends to assist them with out-of-pocket
expenses. This summer the Observatory will be
recruiting a total of four interns. Applications for the
program are available from the Observatory, and
should be returned promptly for most thorough
consideration. Applications can be submitted online.
Individuals with an interest in meteorology,
environmental studies, and visitor services are
especially encouraged to apply. The minimum age for
applicants is 18; the most promising applicants will be
invited for an interview. For more information about
the Mount Washington Observatory internships,
contact the Observatory at Box 2310, North Conway
NH, 03860, 1-800-706-0432, or visit Mount
Washington Observatory.
Tenth Mountain Division Dedicates New
Structure at Cranmore
Under snowy skies, troops and veterans of the Tenth
Mountain Division gathered to dedicate Cranmore
Mountain Resort's newest addition to its base area
facilities. The Tenth Mountain HQ is a 5,200 square
foot Sprung - an engineered stress membrane
structure constructed of extruded aluminum arches,
integrally connected to an all weather outer
architectural membrane. Sprung structures are
engineered to withstand high wind and shed snow.
Located adjacent to the base area's Eating House,
this new heated facility is home to the resort's rental
shop and seasonal lockers while also providing an
additional 120 seats for skiers and riders to relax
between runs.
The Tenth Mountain HQ dedication was part of the
Hannes Schneider Meister Cup weekend at Cranmore,
a celebration of ski history commemorating the father
of modern skiing and the mountain soldiers of the
Tenth Mountain Division. Cranmore General Manager
Ben Wilcox welcomed the group to the dedication
and spoke about how proud he is, in his new position,
to be a part of the tradition the Meister Cup
celebration represents. Sargent. Patrick Muir from
Fort Drum, New York, presented Cranmore with the
event's "colors," an American flag that flew during
the Meister Cup Race. "This flag and the Tenth
Mountain Division stanchion it will be displayed in will
be displayed in the Tenth Mountain HQ for as long as
the structure stands," said Muir. Herbert Schneider,
the son of the honored Skimeister and a Tenth
Mountain veteran himself, reflected on the day when
he and his father first came to Mount Cranmore from
Austria, and skied the South Slope. He offered
tribute to the members of the elite Tenth and the
men who lost their lives fighting for freedom in Italy
60 years ago and to those fighting in the Middle East
today. For more information, call 1-800-SUN N SKI
(786-6754) or visit Cranmore
Resort.
