EATING FRENCH FRIES - GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Although it sounds far fetched, eating French fries could have a positive effect on the environment and the skiing conditions at North Conway's Cranmore Mountain Resort. Cranmore is the only ski resort in the East to use biodiesel fuel to power its fleet of snow grooming machines. Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable diesel fuel replacement derived from natural oils such as soybean or canola oil. It can even be manufactured from recycled restaurant grease. It is a nontoxic, biodegradable, cleaner- burning fuel that works in any diesel engine - trucks, construction equipment, buses, and cars - with few or no modifications. The environmental benefits of using biodiesel include reduced particulate emissions, toxic air contaminants, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Biodiesel is the first and only alternative fuel to have a complete evaluation of emission results and potential health effects submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Clean Air Act Section 211(b). Some of the proven benefits of using B20, a biodiesel mixture that is calibrated for winter usage, include a 20 percent decrease in unburned hydrocarbons and sulfates and a 12 percent reduction in Carbon Monoxide and particulate matter.

"This pilot project at Cranmore Mountain Resort is critical in demonstrating the cold-weather viability of biodiesel in heavy-duty vehicle applications for other New England fleets," says Cranmore General Manager Ben Wilcox. "It is the first of its kind at ski areas in the eastern U.S. and Cranmore is proud to be a leader in helping to preserve our natural resources."

So go ahead, order French fries when you ski Cranmore. For more information, call 1-800-SUN N SKI (786-6754) or visit Cranmore Mountain .

    Out and About

    EXPERIENCE THE
    WORLD'S WORST WEATHER
    WITH EDU TRIPS

The Mount Washington Observatory, which operates and maintains the weather and scientific research station atop the Northeast's highest peak, has announced a series of educational overnight trips to the top of Mount Washington scheduled for late March and April. The trips, called "EduTrips", are offered by the private, non- profit observatory so that individuals can better understand the natural history and human history of the mountain, which some call "The Home of the World's Worst Weather."

In addition to a March 19-20 EduTrip focusing on mountain cartography - including historical mapping of Mount Washington and today's GPS technology, the Observatory has several trips which consider other topics.

  • March 24-25 trip will focus on avalanches and snow safety - critical matters for winter hikers, climbers, and backcountry skiers.
  • March 31-April 1 will cover Mount Washington's natural history, and the fascinating wildlife and vegetation of its alpine environment.
  • April 2-3's trip will surround the geological history of the White Mountains, especially the glacial geology of the Presidential Range.
  • April 7-8 will feature an introduction to the knowledge and skills necessary to enjoy the trails and slopes of the White Mountains in winter.
  • April 14-15 will offer a look at life behind the scenes at Mount Washington's summit.
  • April 14-15 will be the final trip covering an overview of the basics of meteorology

Although the Observatory provides snow tractor transportation to and from the summit for its EduTrippers, the participants in the overnight program still need to be in very good physical shape and properly clothed and equipped for the mountain's extremes, a precaution that Mount Washington's severe weather always demands. The trips also include an overnight at the Observatory, meals, a tour of the weather station, instruction, and related materials. For more details about the Observatory's EduTrip program, including schedule, application, and fee information, write: Mount Washington Observatory EduTrips, Box 2310, North Conway NH 03860, or call 1-(800)-706-0432 x 203. Observatory and EduTrip information is also available online at Mt. Washington Observatory .
