NWC Wine Tasting at Rainbow Lodge
Friday, March 26th, 5:30 to 7:30 pm

Rainbow Lodge, one of Houston's most beautiful  restaurant venues, is holding a special Wine Tasting Event for Northwest Corner and our friends.  These casual tastings feature four different pouring stations, with pairings of wines and wonderful food selections.  The stations are spread throughout the restaurant and on the deck, to facilitate a "Sip and Stroll" atmosphere for mixing and mingling.

The $29 admission fee allows you to visit each station as often as you like.  Attendance is limited to 150.  To make your reservations, call Rainbow Lodge at 713-861-8666.  Be sure to specify that you are making a reservation for the March 26th tasting. These things tend to sell out, so don't count on being able to buy a ticket without a reservation!

March is a great time of year at Rainbow Lodge.  We'll be able to take advantage of the extensive deck, which cascades down the back of the restaurant to a beautifully landscaped yard complete with a creek flowing through it.

Ranbow Lodge is a casual yet upscale place.  Nice jeans or business casual attire will be fine for our gathering.  The restaurant is located at 2011 Ella, at E. TC Jester, just a couple of blocks inside Loop 610.

NWC Goes To The Opera
Saturday, March 27th at 10 am
opera singerLoyal NWC member Laura Downing (not pictured here!) is creating a new special interest group for Northwest Corner Opera Lovers, and for those who would like to develop or enhance their appreciation for opera.  If you'd like more information about the group, contact Laura.

As a first event, the group will attend a showing of Hamlet at the Edwards Cinema on I-10 just west of Loop 610.  This show is part of the Metropolitan Opera's award winning series "The Met:  Live in HD".  The performance beings at 11 am, but the NWC Opera Group will gather at 10 at the Red Robin Restaurant directly across from the theater for a beverage and some socializing before the show.  Tickets for the performance are $22 and  Laura recommends that you purchase them in advance by clicking on this link.   You can buy your show tickets in advance by clicking on this link.

The works of Shakespeare have inspired more operatic adaptations than any other writer's. Simon Keenlyside and Natalie Dessay bring their extraordinary acting and singing skills to two of the Bard's most unforgettable characters in this new production of Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet. For the role of Ophelia, the French composer created an extended mad scene that is among the greatest in opera.  Conductor: Louis Langrée; Production: Patrice Caurier/Moshe Leiser; Natalie Dessay, Jennifer Larmore, Toby Spence, Simon Keenlyside, James Morris.

Expected Running time: 3 hours, 43 minutes, 2 intermissions

Pride In The Park with the Astros:
GLBT Recognition Night
Deadline for signing up with NWC:  May 1st
Date of Game:  Saturday, July 10th at 6 pm

babe pointing home runFor the first time ever, the Houston Astros are honoring their GLBT fans with a special Pride In The Park Day on July 10th.  The 'Stros will play their fierce rivals, the Louis Cardinals - should be a great game!  The Gay Men's Chorus and the Bayou City Women's Chorus will be performing the national anthem.  Very cool!

Northwest Corner will be attending as a group.  We've already sold 53 of the 100 seats the Astros have set aside for us, but there's still room for you! Tickets are $32 for lower level seats along the left field line, and $10 of that will go to GLBT charities.

Northwest Corner will also have a private refreshment area, just behind our seats in Section 109. Participation in this part of the evening is optional.  The area, which will be open 2 hours before the game through the 7th inning for our partying pleasure,  features a private cash bar, and complementary hot dogs, chips and popcorn.  Tickets for the refreshment area are $12 for singles and $20 for couples.  Note:  Even if you're not sitting with NWC, you are welcome to join our hospitality area.

The deadline for signing up to attend as part of the Northwest Corner group is May 1st.  Once we get details nailed down with the Astros, we'll mail out purchasing info to all of you who signed up via Evite.

Please RSVP via Evite, whether you're signing up for the game and/or the hospitality area.  Since Evite is pretty quirky about links, we're going to give you two links, with hopes that at least one of them will work for you.

king and queen

Unlike many cities, in which the Pride Grand Marshals are simply designated by the local Pride organization, in Houston we solicit nominations and then invite the community to vote. Pride Houston makes it easy for everyone to cast your ballots - all voting is being done on-line and it only takes a few minutes.  The categories are Male, Female, Organization and Honorary, and the nominees are:

Male:  Edward Sanchez, Gary Wood, Keville Ware, and Pete Rodriguez
Female:  Carol Wyatt, Cristan Williams, and Delma Cummings
Organization:  AssistHers, ERSICSS, Lesbian Health Initative of Houston, Montrose Counseling Center, and Montrose Softball Leagues
Honorary:  Ann Robison

You can find out more about each nominee by clicking here.  Deadline for voting is April 8th.  The 2010 Pride Parade and Festival will be held on Saturday, June 26th.
