Greetings!

Hats off to The Lesbian Health Initiative for a swell valentine's event!  They did a great job, and I know the hundreds of women in attendance had a swell time.

Before I started volunteering my own self, I never gave a moment's thought to all the time and effort it takes to produce the events in our community.  Did you know that a successful event like the Valentine's Dinner Dance requires months of planning and preparation, and many volunteers?  Three messages here:volunteers holding hands
  • Volunteering is fun!  It's a great way to meet new people and build friendships, while working side by side to help our community.  Looking for ways to expand your social network?  Volunteer!  If you need help figuring out which group might be best for you, email me and I'll be happy to help.
  • There are LOTS of swell events in our community, covering an endless variety of interests.  Please support the organizations and their events, by honoring them with your presence.
  • When you attend the parties and events in our community, please take time to thank the volunteers who work so hard to make them happen.
OK, I'm off my soapbox now!

The Rant

frustrated woman I think I am perhaps too invested in the Olympics.  I was watching curling last weekend (the only thing on early in the day) and found myself tensing for a particular play.  Now mind you, I have absolutely no understanding of the strategy or even the scoring system for this sport, yet I was tense and hopeful as the "rock" made its way towards the "house" (at least I am mastering the lingo!!).  Did we want it to hit the other rocks?  Hit the circle in the middle?  No clue, but I watched religiously anyway.  See what I mean?  It might be time to step away from the TV for awhile!

Still, I love just about everything about the Olympics:  the pageantry, the spirit, the beautiful scenes from British Columbia, the wacky sports, the uniforms, the awards ceremonies (I cry),  the schmaltzy stories of setbacks and comebacks (I cry), the monumental coordination effort of all of these people/venues/events, and the fact that they are on TV for about elebendy million hours over the next 2 weeks!  And I am humbled and inspired by the athletes - their dedication, skill, courage, tenacity and commitment.  Imagine dedicating your life to an event that is only held every four years!  I can't manage to stay on a diet for four days, for gosh sakes!!!

That having been said, I do have a few thoughts of a snarky nature:

penguin on sledI thought luge was weird enough, until i saw doubles luge - two guys (who are all seemingly related) lying on top of one another on a tiny sled.  What kind of training do you need for the luge (besides the raw courage to travel at 85 miles an hour on a flimsy sled)?  Let's see - you have to hold your head up for about 90 seconds in order to see to steer, so strong neck muscles are probably a must.  Speaking of steering, you do that with your toes, so add strong toes to the list.  The start features several pushing strokes with your hands, but how strong do you have to be to do that 3 or 4 times?  And that's just the top guy - exactly what are the skills and responsibilities of that bottom guy????  Perhaps the most important attribute for lugers (tops and bottoms) is the willingness to appear in public in a skin tight outfit, so that let's me out!

biathlonForget traditional political rivalries like the Arabs and Israelis or Russians and Americans.  There is nothing like an Olympics cat fight!  For example, the Norwegians and the Swedes have been seriously giving each other the evil eye during the countless Nordic events.  I believe some stern words may have been exchanged and national flags have been waved in a very aggressive manner.  Such exquisite tension!  The biathlon is especially interesting, since the skiers are armed with sharpshooting rifles!  So far, shooting has been confined to the targets, but since it appears that the Nordic events will NEVER end, stay tuned...

speed skaterSpeed skating (long track as opposed to the more entertaining short track) suffers from the dual whammy of being approximately as exciting to watch as drying paint, and having the absolutely ugliest and most unflattering uniforms in the sporting world.  Special mention here to the Canadians, whose unies seem to have been dipped in wax from the waist to mid thigh.  Truly hideous!

penguin skatingIs there a straight male figure skater on the planet?  Anywhere?  If there are, they must feel very lonely.  Ya know, sort of like a straight female gym coach.  My thinking is:  ya may as well go gay, since you know you're going to get labeled anyway.

curling targetI envisioned that curling was invented by bored Canadians, seeking another indoor sport which allowed drinking, in order to pass those long winter days and nights.  However, I have since learned that it was invented by the Scots in the 1500s.  I also learned that it is a "sport" with lots of courtesy:  you NEVER celebrate an opponents mistakes.  And if you decide that your team is too far behind to catch up, it is considered very sportsmanlike to quit with a friendly shaking of hands.  OK, that's pretty swell, but isn't this more of a game than a real sport?  One of the key curlers at these games said that he eats pizza at least 3 or 4 days a week, for gosh sakes.  Can you imagine skier Lindsey Vonn or skater Apollo Ono being able to do that and still compete???  Still, any sport that is associated with pizza and beer is just my kind of sport.  If you'd like to immerse yourself in the curling culture, the Curling Club of Houston (I am NOT making that up!) is holding several Curling 101 sessions next Friday and Saturday nights..  Check our their website for details.  Just trying to be a full-service website, doncha know!
    So Long!

W
ell, that's all for this edition of Social Notes.

I've gotta run!  Hmmmm....do I watch hockey or curling this afternoon?  I don't really care for either of them, but that's beside the point!  Go USA!

Sincerely,

Carol Wyatt
