Greetings!,
A couple of random networking notes to start off this edition of Social Notes:
- We've had a great response to the new organization for GLBTs living outside the northwest corner of the loop. In fact, a number of people have asked if they can join in the fun, even though they don't live in our targeted geographic area. The answer is YES! We don't want to exclude anyone. The Launch Party for our group, which is called Northwest Corner, is this Friday at my house. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP. You can find out more about Northwest Corner, and about the party, by reading the article below.

- Are you interested in helping created a social/civic organization for GLBTs living south of Houston (Clear Lake, Galveston, Pearland etc)? If so, please contact Hana Michelle.
- Do you work in HISD? I know several quality women who are looking for jobs in the district, but they have discovered that it really helps to know someone on the inside in order to find and secure good jobs. So, if you either know of jobs in HISD, or are in a position to hire, please contact me and I'll put you in touch with the job seekers. One is looking for a principal's position at any level, and the other is looking for a teacher's position in Social Studies, grades 4 - 8.

Northwest Corner Launch Party Friday, May 29th
|
Northwest Corner is a new social and civic group for GLBTs living outside the northwest corner of Loop 610.
To introduce our group to the community (and to prove that "there IS life outside the loop!), we're throwing a cocktail party and barbecue at Carol's house at 3503 Cherry Forest Drive.
Bring $10 to cover the cost of the barbecue, and the steering committee will provide beer, wine and vodka-based drinks. The party will be held pool-side, so shorts are definitely the recommended fashion theme! Click here to visit the evite for more information about the party, and to RSVP.
Please feel free to forward the invitation to all your friends in the area - the more the merrier! To find out more about Northwest Corner and the part of town we are targeting, visit our website.
Can't make this event but would like to receive information about other Northwest Corner events? Simply email us with your name, phone number, address and neighborhood.

Professional Womens' Happy Hour, featuring a fund-raiser for mayoral candidate Annise Parker Wednesday, June 3rd, 7 to 10 pm
|
Join Houston's nicest and nicest looking women at this monthly get-together. Meteor is a swell bar - beautifully decorated, clean, very upscale.
And as a special bit of lagniappe this month, we're holding a fund-raiser for Annise Parker, who is running for mayor of Houston. You shouldn't vote for Annise just because she is gay (although there is THAT!). You should support and vote for Annise because she is a dedicated and accomplished public servant who will do a fabulous job of leading out city into the future! You can find out more about Annise, and her campaign, by visiting her website. Annise's campaign staff will be onsite throughout the evening, to answer questions (and to pick up your donation envelopes!) and Annise will give a short, informal talk around 8:30 pm.
Suggested minimum donation for this event is $25. Girls, I know times are tight, but here is a chance for you to impact the future of our city, and to support an extremely well-qualified GLBT candidate who has an excellent chance of becoming mayor of the 4th largest city in the US. Isn't that worth at least $25???? And if you can't make the happy hour, but want to make a contribution, you can do so on-line.
Note: I know it's hard to walk into a bar when you don't know anyone. Soooo, come find me, and I will introduce you around. The bartenders know who I am (oddly enough) and they'll point me out to you. It is my monthly mission in life to make sure that no one is standing all alone at our happy hours!!!

The Rant

Happy Memorial Day, everyone! I hope you've had some fun on this glorious 3 day weekend, but I also hope you've taken a moment to remember the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. It commemorates the members of the armed services who have died doing their duty for their country. For those of you who are serving, or have served, I send my profound thanks to you all!
And speaking of service, it is PAST time for Obama to get rid of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, doncha think! Frankly, I am disenchanted with him over several issues, but his lack of attention to GLBT rights is up there at the top of the list. Some say we need to give him more time - that the economy needs to take precedence right now. But there will never be a convenient time to fight for our civil rights. In the past two weeks, we've learned that the military is discharging 3 more extrememly valued service members, just because they are gay!
Do you think the Army has all the Arab linguists they need? I doubt it. Yet they are cashiering Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and well-regarded captain whose speciality happens to be Arab linguistics. Or how about the pilot, a veteran of two wars, who estimates that the military has invested over $25 million in his training over the years? Nope, he's too dangerous to keep around, just because some homophobe might get nervous when he enters the showers.
Over 1000 GLBT military leaders have written to Obama, begging him to overturn DADT. He sent a hand-written note to Army office Sandy Tsao, promising to overturn, but also warning that it would take time since Congress is involved. Sadly, Sandy ran out of time this week. She is being forced out of the Army because Obama hasn't even gotten around to sending Congress a bill to scrap DADT, much less spending any of his enormous stash of politcal capital by speaking out on the issue. And that, my friends, sucks.
Do you realize how backwards we are on this issue? Of the 26 NATO countries that have militaries, TWENTY of them permit gays to serve openly.
You can let Obama know how you feel about this by visiting the White House website. Raising your voice is the LEAST you can do to repay those service people who are willing to put their lives on the line for us. They fight for our freedom - won't you fight for theirs?????
