On Wednesday, September 26, Elev8 held a briefing for congressional staff, in cooperation with Representative Luis Gutierrez from Illinois. The briefing focused on Elev8's evaluation and data-driven decision making, including the development and structure of the evaluation, the outcomes being used to gauge program success, and how data is driving program quality across a diverse array of collaborating partners.
Staff from 15 congressional offices, as well as representatives from the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the National Association on School-Based Health Care came together in the Rayburn House Office Building to learn about Elev8's approach to evaluation and discuss its outcomes, impact and lessons to date.
Attendees were particularly interested in the breadth of Elev8's evaluation. Indeed, one of the key lessons of Elev8's work is the importance of evaluating a range of outcomes that address the "whole child." Because academic impact takes time to achieve, Elev8 has measured interim outcomes along the way, including parent involvement, safety of the school environment, access to health care, student orientation toward learning, and participation in positive activities. While improving academic achievement is an ultimate goal, these interim indicators help programs and schools know if they are on the right path. Findings show that Elev8 community schools are making a difference on these important metrics, and that the time is now ripe to examine the initiative's impact on academic achievement.
