Forum Registration Closes in 10 Days
The 8th Annual Illinois Community Schools Forum will be here before we know it! You won't want to miss this opportunity to celebrate the collective impact of community schools and learn strategies for continuing to enhance our work. This year's Forum will feature over 25 high quality and practical workshops, three inspiring keynotes, and the opportunity to network with community school leaders from across the country. The agenda and workshop descriptions are available on our website.
This year we've also partnered with the national Coalition for Community Schools to offer a Pre-Forum Seminar: Scaling Up School and Community Partnerships on Thursday, October 18 from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Participants will explore the community schools strategy and hear from local community school leaders. They will also learn about the process of scaling up with a focus on creating a collaborative leadership structure, constructing a shared vision, and planning for implementation and sustainability. This seminar is designed to enable participants to develop strategies to take home and implement in their own schools and communities.
Register for the Pre-Forum Seminar or register for both days and save on your registration fee.
Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10.

Bright Promises Project
Illinois Collaboration on Youth (ICOY), in partnership with the Illinois AfterSchool Network, will select six to eight out of school time programs to participate in a two year project. The Bright Promises Foundation is funding this project throughout Illinois to promote resilience in children ages 8-12 years old who have been exposed to trauma.
ICOY will grant the opportunity for agencies to become more trauma informed through an organizational capacity assessment, assistance in developing an action plan, and providing technical assistance and training. The goal is to change the organizational culture and increase protective factors to better meet the needs of the children and families affected by trauma. The timeframe for this project is November 1, 2012 through June 30, 2014.
Process:
- Programs will be selected through an application process.
- Please review project overview and application.
- Multi-site agencies must submit an individual program application to be considered for each project.
- Programs will be notified by Thursday, November 1, 2012.
Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. If you have any questions or concerns please email Michelle Arnold before October 8. |

DREAM Relief Workshop
President Obama issued an executive order halting the deportation of many young, law-abiding immigrants and allowing them the chance to live and work legally in the United States. Under President Obama's executive order, almost 800,000 young people are eligible to apply for work authorization and protection from deportation. This is a historic opportunity for young immigrants who have been unduly punished for their situation.
On Saturday, October 6, 2012, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, State Senator Heather Steans, State Representative Kelly Cassidy, State Representative Greg Harris and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) are hosting an event where qualified individuals can get assistance filling out their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Applications.
The event is on October 6, from 9am - 1pm, at Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson. Participants must register in advance, online, at www.dreamrelief.org. Download this flyer for more information.
They are also looking for volunteers willing to receive training to be Application Assistants and help young people apply for deferred action at this event. Please contact Leslie Combs, district director for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, if you are interested in volunteering. |
